NOTE:

Ok I am back from vacation, so I wanted to try something different.
So as I promised here is the first MATTE WARS. Imagine that you are painting a VFX painting for a movie.... but you only have ONE DAY.

The idea is to try to create a VFX shot from source file. The source file can
be either a locked video or a still image. For more information, go to this >>thread<<. (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=192283)

For these FXWARS threads you have to use a foundation image/video that is presented in the thread.

Depending on the input I will try to do more of these now and then.
I am looking forward to your input.

___________________________________________________________________

These are the rules:
* You HAVE to use the source image. But you may use only part of the image.
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

Yay, my first attempt at a matte painting. I've always wanted to do one of these.

This is far from complete, but it's all I can finish in, according to VisualBoo Timer, 3 hours 10 minutes on my Wacom Intuos 2 tablet with Photoshop CS.

Is this replacing today's normal sketch? If so, how often will this be happening?

I was hoping you would start this after the Space Opera Challenge was over.
Better luck next time :(

First atempt to do a matte painting... Used 2 photos... Unfortunally the second one a have chosen was very low resolution, so i ended up with a small pic....

Hey Roberto, i think we should have not only the matte wars today, but also our normal sketch! One shouldn´t replace the other... Well here it is:

Am i suposed to post the other pic i have used?

From the sublime to the ridiculous 3 hrs
humm and it's not really finished. I had no real idea what to do with this for the first 2.5 hrs
If I feeling insane later I might try to add to it

This was alot harder than I thought it would be. I only had an hour to do it in so it is really quick but I managed to cover every part of the photo. As you can see I rearanged some of the stuff.

to drewblit: I don't know if you noticed this but there is a huge reflection in the sea of a rock? tree? you made disappear :D Try to loose it.. Kinda too big for leaving it there.
Otherwise I think your's is very nice and clean. Well done. Looks real enough for me.
Other's are good too.

drewblit
01-12-2005, 03:03 PM
Thanks eug3n, yeah I noticed it, also the sea doesn't show on the horizon where it should.
I spent over a couple hours mucking around with small stuff then worked out what I wanted to
change. I would like to change much more and clean up the lines but i'll see if I have time.

Tried another. This stuff is fun to do, but also painfull. Lots of hard work. And i still miss the normal daily sketch, in wich i´m adicted.

And the boat looks like sh*t. Don´t know how to improve...

robinayles

DoInferno - it doesn't look that bad, it looks a little flat compared to everything else is all. Really good job!

Roberto, I love the whole idea of doing a mattepainting.
Thanks for providing the photograph, very nice.

I was sick as a dog today so I stayed home. But because I was so bored I started fiddling around with your photo. I couldn't stop, although I feel like someone is banging a hammer on my head and I have a fever...

My first matte painting.

Nicely done, jeroentje! Great mood and detail.

For those still wondering what the heck a matte painting is, here are a few informative links:

Matte World Digital (http://www.matteworld.com/)
Click on the links for "The Alamo," "The Last Samurai," and "Down with Love" to see before and after shots.

Voxfilm (http://www.voxfilm.com/mattepaint1.html)
http://www.invaderdigital.com/lordoftherings.htm
http://go.to/seungho
http://www.dusso.com/

Here is a pretty good description I found by Machette on 3DLuvr:

"Matte painting was originally where you'd paint many layers of glass slates and layer them on top of eachother in the background of a film. These days with digital matte painting, you paint usually in photoshop and or painter.
Matte paintings are usually extensions on film, such as if you built a set but didn't want to spend 10k building the background castle, you might want to paint it in.

There's two different methods, some people just have thousands upon thousands of cd's of photos and sample sources and just rubber stamp and cut and paste sources togeather to form their images, others who are more traditional artists paint their plates oposed to sourcing photos, and of course there's varying degrees of both."

There might be other, more specific definitions. It was fun to hunt those sites down, since I'm totally new to matte painting myself.

...the source pict is perfect as well.

Capitan — I guess, for the first one is OK, but the place looks deserted.
Gentrifier — You might want to get rid of the cars. ;D
drawMonger — I wish I was there. Try using more photos to get that realistic background look.
DoInferno — Cool misty feel #1, Ship is a little flat compared to the rest, but you got the right approach.
drewblit — that pirate fort looks alive, you have the right approach.
dark_abismo — hell broke loose! Attack! Cool, what's in the water on the left? If the flames were smaller and the smoke heavier and darker I think it could pull it together even better. Check out jeroentje's.
twixeeer — Very nice! Nice integration of both environments. I like how the red clothing of the tiny people stand out against the rough terrain; it makes you look. Look forward to seeing other mattes from you.
jeroentje — Really cool!I can almost see the smoke moving! The stars are HUGE.
J_Grieve — Interesting coloration, dramatic/funky
Drumwhore — NICE! The integration of the sky and the enviromental light—well achieved. Where on earth did you get the ships? is perfect! If can be picky the only thing I would change is the wave pattern on the concrete on the lower right and, nix the car.
coCoKNIght — Pirates of the Caribbean meets Roswell—off the wall! cool cave reference—that better be a huge a** cave, El Morro Castle is not small :)

Great job everyone, can wait to get home and start playing!

Gentrifier
01-12-2005, 10:08 PM
Ack! Thanks for pointing that out. I was so focused on the pathway last night that I didn't really even look amongst the trees there. Man. Well, I guess I'll have to get rid of those things.....any waterskiers in the background I missed? Stupido.

DoInferno

hey Tuzz, i like the first one better. the second looks to much like the original pic. The problem on the second is the lightning. You can see it´s night, but what a dark night man! Maybe you should add some moonlight, and definetely some of the fire reflex on the walls and water...

---->>::<<----

About the sketch or matte issue, i like´em both, and i can live a day without a matte war. Definitely it´s been a hard day without the normal sketch. I mean, it´s suposed to be daily right?

I had to go to conceptart.org to find a daily sketch session. The problem is i don´t quite like their session as much as ours... Do you want us to go there man?

having so many great ideas in the sugestion topic, i think we could have the normal sketches really daily, and the mattewars you post it in the frequency you want. Of course daily is best, but them again, you would have to find a pic for us always, so, do the way you find better. Just please, don´t leave us again with no normal sketchs man! Please!!!

Hope everyone agrees...

Pirate Sea Port - Matte Wars #1

http://www.k-squared.com/piratematte.jpg
About 3 hrs PS Wacom - its a merge between a pic from New Zealand and Roberto's San Juan pic. Talk about an interesting mix of cultures! :)

There are some amazing results on here! Loads of fun. I vote that we only do this about once a week. I can see how its hard to stop and feel that you are finished. There are probably about a dozen things I could add or change.

Great work everyone!

why not put the matte warz in a separate forum? (link right below the daily sketch forum link?)
Would be cool if we had a daily sketch every day as the name suggests and to have a week to complete the matte warz peace.

Decided to spend a little more time on this, bringing my total to 8 hours (that still counts as a day, right? I have just developed a very healthy respect for matte painters!

This was supposed to be the flying dutchmans landing pad, but I got tired and left his "ghostship out". The clouds were originally really big waves but...

Ballistic - you entry is absolutely breathtaking! Beautiful work!

modified - simplified clouds and added mountains - gm

I think the rules are there like guides, I don't think anyone here takes them very strictly :) it's just that you need them and to make sure things won't get out of hand.

anyhow I dig your rocks in the foreground. Great to see you updated your sky, it was bothering me in the last pic. It's better now. I would suspect a haze in the distance near the mountains. And the gradient blue sky seems a bit out of place in your picture. very nice result :)
