Hi Jay,

Welcome in and thank you for raising the issue. Many developments are anticipated over the next month or so. I'd like to take your permission and broaden the scope of this thread a little. It's a while since I monitored hardware well enough to help you myself. That is why I'm asking those here who are up to date, for some insight on the upcoming motherboards choices. Surely everyone will benefit from a makeshift guide of sorts. I'm interested in the nForce2 based motherboards, others may have something to add.

Looking forward to your replies,:wavey:

I've been told, and have had experience supporting staying away from VIA based chipsets. This is hard however, as they are the most ubiquitous and advanced in terms of hardware support. So I would recommend SiS, ALi, or NForce chipset based motherboards.

While VIA boards can churn out good performance, you spend most of your time fighting an unstable system and incompatibilities.

The case may be different with some of VIA's newer chipsets, like the 333 and 400 based ones, but my experiences (and other 3D professionals) with all previous ones have been disastrous. Not something you want in a professional workstation.

hey fellas how is it going...im in the process of building a new pc myself I just got a antec sx1040 case..thinking dual...why dont u go dual...that would be good for 3d
as for the motherboard i was checking out the tyan s2466 motherboard, which had good reviews. i heard people talking about the dual msi k7d master L board, and the reviews on the gigabyte ga-7dpxdw board were good too. these boards are good for the amd mp2200 dual processors
the board prices go based on pricewatch...205 for the tyan board, 220 for the msi board, and 239 for the gigabyte board.

someone told me the dual xeons are way much better overall and he recommended the supermicro p4cde+ motherboard and a 2.0ghz xeon processor..so i have been looking at that and the price dosen't seem that
bad. he told me tha if i want the best the xeons are the way to go. you can get the xeon 2ghz processor for 226 on pricewatch and the supermicro board
for 369

still not sure what way im gonna go yet either amd or intel......gotta see how
the money goes first ....i hope this helps in your search

VIA chipsets are notorious for being incompatible with massive amounts of hardware.

NLE's, Pro Audio equipment, SCSI controllers etc.

I would certainly recommend an AMD system, but get nForce2 or 760MP.

Yea I am going dual. I got my Athlon 1900 mp processors yesterday. I got the Antec 1240x case. I also heard Tyan makes good high performance motherboards so I guess thats what I'm going to buy. They sell them at http://www.newegg.com but there on backorder:annoyed: ... I don't think there is any other place cheap like newegg
