Hello,

I dunno the type of characters you want to create, but i can suggest at least 2 tutorials to help get some direction. I'm a max user so i have no clue how helpful these will be:

This helped me quite a bit to get started:
http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp

Also, you might want to check out the video tutorial by Ben Mathis (game model):
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/tutorial/tutorial.htm

(scroll down 'til you see character modeling: video, 9 parts)

Hope this helps.

The book "Maya5 Fundamentals" from New Riders comes with a DVD and step-by-step modeling of a face (from a photo). I saw a lot of tutorials, but this one is great.

In your viewport: view>image plane>import image

Or just create a nurbs or poly plane and slap a new material on that.

And of course: www.learning-maya.com

That Joan of Arc one is great, I often refer back to it when doing characters. Here's a really good head tut (Maya) :

Also check out the sticky at the start of this forum, a lot of good links in there:
