Hiya,

This is a sketch towards my next painting. It is a purely technical study drawn from reference, I'm looking to try and do some digital figure drawing and painting and refine my skills generally.

This is hand drawn straight into Photoshop with a Wacom 6x8, I created a rough outline first and then rendered it on a layer on top in a "pencil" style. I wanted to see how well I could emulate traditional pencils in photoshop, I think it looks quite convincing although a close up would give it away.

Any comments or crits would be great before I launch into the painting itself :)

PS: original ref can be found here (http://www.racism.org.za/gallery/closing/Zulu%20dancer_JPG_view.htm) .

And for the curious, my intial rough is here (http://www.btinternet.com/~frog01/zulu-rough.jpg) and a detail view of his face is here (http://www.btinternet.com/~frog01/zulu-detail.jpg) .

He looks like he could really jam on some steel drums!

Haha, not the most useful crit I've ever had, but funny nonetheless :)

I thought that was a pencil drawing before I read the post

The hands seems too small and his right foot looks like it is on too much of a downward angle, the perspective looks off. I doubt you want to redo these things, but either way the picture is still very well done.

I really like the fur, and the face it great :)

Ok I'm looking at it again, and maybe the hands aren't too small. They are the length from his chin to his brow, which seems correct, maybe a little small, but nothing too absurd.

Really nice definition on the arms

Like Blake mentioned, his right foot looks like it has a bit too much perspective on it.

Nice work with the wacom too..... that reminds me, I should really use mine more :hmm:

Keep up the good work

Very very nice! To improve it, you can add some details in the shadow area so it's not totally black.

hey ... i think you're a very talented painter!
i've checked the reference and the closer head view!
and ... it's a very good reference painting!
and yes i've thought "cool pencil work" when i looked first at your image...but after reading i looked again and it's hard to see in my eyes that this is made by a ps and a wacom!
looks like "analog painting" ;-)
real cool!
i think the anatomy is really good figured out, acording to the reference...but i think day dreamer is right...the shadow on the legs are too dark!...
i'm very interested in your painted version, because i think it needs no paint! it creates it's own spirit how it is now..so i'll check your updates...

Thanks for the input, it means a lot. I really want to get this one right so I'm going to rework the head, hands and feet tonight. I'll post an update.

Here's an update, I've made the head and hands a little bigger and reworked the feet. Any further comments welcome.

One major advantage of working digitally is that it's a lot easier to make corrections to your work :)

Outstanding work. The head, hands, feet all look great. As for the dark pure black area's, they really don't bother me as much as other people. I think it's ok, but if you did add detail it could never hurt :)

Anyway, I can't wait for more updates

The hard and arms carry the picture. The right heel looks a little flat, aside from that tweek it's great!
