I was chalenged yesterday to create very quckly blue exhaust flame for spaceships in martian comercial. There was 5 shots to rotoscope and everything must be done in two hours. So I tried to fake it in a lightwave style (yes I am LW ex). I suppose that everyone know this technique but for sure.

First I created polygonal object from sphere, with shape of the flame. Than I created the Lambert material for it and started to connect textures. I used planar projected ramp for transparency, and 3d texture for color, I used crater with blue and white colors, I streched this texture in direction of the flame and animated position in this direction too. I also add ramp for incadescence in the same style i used for transparency. Than I activated Glow, at level of 1, and switchched the source shape off. Little tweaking in glorious IPR and here it is. VERY quick rendered and managable flame. The ability of Maya render to switch off the source surface for glow is realy good thing.

So, very short but efficient. It helped me. Together with 2 frames traditional animation style and color correction in post it given us result very similar to traditional painted flames in animated movies. Director was happy. So did we.

By the way whats your style to create flames for various purposes?
