Here with a new wip. C&C most useful. The first image are the finished bits...well kinda. The second has where the hair/eyebrows will be, which I haven't got to yet!!
This is the first time I've really used masks!! So it was a learning experience. Oh and if anyone has any tips for hair...greatly appreciated!!

The only major flaw i see is the chin and bottom lip. The chin should be out a lil more and the lip in a little bit. So it doesn't rule over the chin. Then it'll look better. i can't really crit on the hair till it's simewhere near finished. Other than that it looks good.
Also where is your light source coming from? The shoulder says it's cioming just a little above the face, but the face has practically no highlighting to show it...

Looks good so far, maybe a bit blurry. and a bit flat. I think you need more values in the face .. maybe brighter hilights and deeper shadows?
And try to blend the colours more especially on the shoulder ..it looks a bit blotchy.
But overall great start . As for hair, there are lots of tuts about that on the net and even lots of hairbrushes for photoshop. You can also make your own brushes. Just create a blank canvas (50*50 pixels or something like that) and paint a couple of black tiny dots in there. Now define a brush from this canvas and you should have a pretty usefull hairy brush.
Try to make variations for thicker,shorter.. thinner and/or longer hair.

Thanks for your comments so far, I have tried to create a more three dimmensional feel to the face, I have increased the range of colour in the main face area, aswell as smoothing the whole thing. I'm still not completely happy with the lips and am retescent about oving onto the hair untill I have everything correct.
What are your thoughts to improove this?
@ Triarii :: In regards to light, the face area of the character is under the shadow of the hair, however there is alot of ambience light bouncing about. I have tried to bring out the features more though. Do you think the face needs more of a directional light on it?
I'm quite proud of how the nose is shaping up, here is the nose at the normal size at which I'm painting this image. Do you think it needs sharpening up? Or do you think that it is okay as it stands?
@ Grugi :: Which areas are a bit blurry do you think? Being fairly new at this I'm finding it hard to create the smoothness, but not loose detail! I think this is especially obvious around the lips. I am as yet unsure on how to create the small indentations on the lips, aswell as merging the lips with the rest of the face. As I mentioned earlier I have been using masks, so the lips are seperate from the face. So are the Eye whites and iris'.

I think the edges along the nose and noserills need to sharpen up, they look too blurry compared to the edges around the face where you have used masks.
To blend the mouth with the rest of the face I would collapse the layers in the end and work from there or just create a new layer above the lips and carefully paint along the edges.

Okay, just a small update. I think I'm now finished with the basic shading and it's time to move on to the detailing. I think the lip is blending in better with the face now, what do you think? I removed some of the masks and used the blur tool a bit to create the softer change between the two colours. You may notice i have now put the skin tones in behind the eyebrows in preperation of their arrival. And the other thing I've done is play about with the skin tones again, trying to bring out the subtle colour differences. What are your thoughts?
@ Grugi :: I will now proceed to sharpen up the areas you have mentioned with the detailing stage of the image creation.

Okay I realise that the last few pictures haven't looked much different. But hopefully you'll start being able to see the changes which are taking place with this image. Just finished the eye on her left, and the general skin detail. Hope you like, and please C&C. I really want this image to work!! I dunno, maybe I'm doing it for myself to proove that I can do these realistic things! But it would be whole lotta help if this thread didn't fall into the depths of the CGtalk community, unnoticed. You know what I mean. *Sigh* sorry about that, long day!!

since you explained the face i have no probelm with it anymore, the chin looks fine and the skin is looking good, but the problem is the lip. i hope you don't mind but i made this for you. The lip should follow a line for like the red on i've shown here.
if you see what i mean, the bottom lip is, in most cases, a little in beneath the top lip, and not buldging out as you have it. Fix that and it'll be great.

Hey there, not much time today, but I still got a few minutes in. Just finished the eyes...well pretty much. I may want to slightly touch up the left eye, as it looks slightly different from the right. I think it needs a highlight on the inner edge of the lower eyelid.
I've also tried to bring the nose out subtly, just by adding a sharper edge and a small highlight along it's length. I will darken the cheek behind it a bit more I think, so it'll pop out nicer.
This image is at 100% so you should be able to make out some of the skin detail which I added a few days ago.
So what do you think of the eyes?
@ Triarii :: Thanks for the notes. I'm haven't quite round to that area yet, as soon as I've finished with the left eye I think I'll move onto the lip. Then the eyebrows....sigh!! I had a quick shot at an eyebrow today and it looked....well wrong. Hmm, I'm sure it'll by okay when I get round to it properly!!

her right eye bugs me, the brow seems too far out from the actual eyeball. also the eye ball doesn't seem round, i really like the detail on the eye, but maybe some more and less fuzzyness. good job so far!
