View Full Version : VEHICLE: Tachikoma - Sentient Spider Tank

"Agile spider tanks operated by sentient AI, or manually controlled by an invididual riding in the pod."
Hey guys,
Some of you might recognize this bugger. Anywho, I started the project because the tachikoma are my favorite character in GITS, but my stylized version of the tachikoma will most likely be featured in the short that a few fellow cgtalkers are putting together (Project I.C.E. in the collaborative section)
Here is progress so far:

I've still got to model the pod and the arms, and maybe tweak the legs (and how the legs connect to the body) to maximize mobility; as of right now, I think the tank has a limited range of motion.
Check out the Project I.C.E. website (http://www.madmotion.net/ice/) and our forum (and perhaps our thread here on cgtalk) if your interested. We're going through some changes, so expect some updates and some cool things from us in the very near future.
Cheers!

Software: Maya 6.0
Renderer: Mental Ray - 1 directional with a HDRI pass, Dirtmap pass & shadow pass
Geometry: 98.7% NURBS

Pretty slick little machine there!
It looks like a great start and a very cool design to stylize. I'm not too keen on hard-surface modeling, but it looks very nice in terms of maintaining those nice edges. Keep it up!

exquisite machine my freind, very symmetrical and posterior in my opinion... which is a good thing! Magnificent render pal.. 2 thumbs up!

Looking cool, though the legs make it seem extremely clumsy and unmaneuverable. You definately need at least one extra jojnt in teh legs or rework the shoulder joints. A good example is the spider tank from Ghost In The Shell ;)

I've been using a pic of a toy replica--probably not the best. I'll rework my designs in a few hours to resemble more closely, the original GITS tachikoma.
Daggeronie: yea, 1 person tank...normal person probably would probably be as tall as the tank (not includding the antennas)
JackZhang: J'espere que ton model est bon? est-ce que tu vas montrer plus?
Everyone else--thanks a bunch! I really appreciate the comments! :) keep em coming, as I've got updates soon!
Cheers!

lol! ahem *cough* *cough* Sometimes i can be a bit of a selective reader 0:-)
GITS: ghost in the shell... silly me, sorry for that, actually i meant the tank from the first animation film, the one with body and head seperate. As i recall it didn't have fully articulated arms but they did have a pretty nifty shoulder shoulder joint that allowed a pretty large range of motion.
Hmmmmm another solution can be to introduce some sort of other locomotion? Just an idea,; but how about some wheels or 'roller balls' on its feet to allow for fast speed travel?
Or simply rework the current legs a little bit? It's specifcally the 'knee-cover' that seems to impede the motion range a bit if it wants to lift it's legs, perhaps try shortening that and maybe introduce an articulated knee at the bend?

exactly what I was thinking--wheels were already in the process of being modeled, and I had the same thoughts about the legs. From the instant I made the 'knee-cover' I knew I'd change it. I'll have some updates today, check back later. :D

Kool model , looks a lot like the ref' images to me... now I gotta find myself some
ghost in the shell videos to watch so that I can see one in action......
So when is your next update on this model ? What part is next.
By the way did you get my last PM.
See ya around !!

Looks great!
Nice stylised model, yet still identifiable as a tachikoma.
I noticed the bucket bit at the back where the pilot sits is missing - is this intentional? It looks good without it. More compact.
So are you going for a direct replica or a different take on it?
Dont forget the wheels on his legs too.
Edit - ive just read some of the previous posts, and i found out you are already working on em!
