View Full Version : Confused about Maya Attribute Editor
stuh505 01-07-2005, 08:13 PM I'm used to Max and am a bit confused in this difference in Maya.
In trying to model a poly object, I notice that new attributes keep coming up in the attribute editor when I try to manipulate the object with the poly tools (merge, extrude, etc). Sometimes I will attempt to perform an operation but it doesn't quite work out, and there seems to be no way to remove this "attribute" save using the back button.
I don't understand the purpose of saving this continuous history of the manipulations I make to the object...it seems that it could cause an object to take up an unlimited amount of space without necessarily adding any information. Now I've got to worry about not only making a clean finished mesh, but ALSO not making any mistakes that store unneccessary information in the "history" of the object also? Is there really no way to delete these "attributes"? Is there a way to delete this history other than exporting the object and re-importing it?

The construction history is one of the best things Maya has, so don't underevaluate it and try to understand its potential. Every construction history step can be animated, tweaked at any moment, or reused to make a MEL script. You can even go into the Hypergraph and connect any construction history node to whatever you want (same if you wanna delete the nodes). If you want to delete the history you just need to make a delete by type > history. If you don't even want the construction history there's a button on the shelf for that. Press f1 anyway, or you won't fully understand how it works. Hope this helps.

Hmm...well none of those features are really in my work flow now, but perhaps I will find this functionality useful someday.
I do see a button to turn off the history on the Status Line...although it doesn't seem to work 100%. I don't see any button to remove remove individual nodes from the history (is that possible?) or even to clear the history of an object...but since I looked it up and it's just one MEL command I made that into a custom button on the shelf.

If you want to delete all history of your object, and "bake in" the mods, you can use the pulldown "Edit > Delete By Type > History". This is similar to collapsing the stack in Max.
If you wish to remove just one selected node you can do this in the Attribute Editor. Across the top you will see the corresponding tab for your history. Click on the tab you wish to delete and press the [Select] button at the bottom of the AE window. Then you can press the Del or Backspace key on your keyboard and the node will be removed along with all of it's modifications.

Yup, got this...I've already made a custom button to do this :)

Ooooh...cool. :)

In Maya objects are built with more than one node and not all of them are history nodes. The history deletes only the history nodes. When you delete the history or not accumulating it, you still have several nodes in the attribute editor, which are required for the existence and manipulation of your object.
