View Full Version : TUTORIALS
Hi everyone!
I thought to start a thread where people can show there sketching technique.
Everyone can post tutorials and brushes and stuff in this thread.
Since I was asked several times to do some tutorials (still don't feel like I have enough experience for that.....) I thought I should start this thread.
I answered some questions in some sketchgroup topics but they get lost.
Nobody will search for the old threads to get some information. So I thought this
could be good as a sticky thread so everyone can share there knowledge at any time.
Thnx Roberto for the sticky feature!
So here are some of my files.

Goro - you are so humble! You say that you don't feel you have the experience, but your work is always so wonderful! It does help the rest of us who are newer to the process to see how you "great ones" do your work. Especially how fast you can turn out a fantastic sketch when I labor for hours over something mediocre!
It is greatly appreciated that y'all are so helpful and willing to share your skill and expertise. Thank you very much!

[edit: I wish I had PS CS, your brushes won't load into PS7 or PS Elements :( ]

great idea goro. I'd like to encourage sketchers to do some tutorials and share some stuff, don't feel embarassed, get it over with :)
I don't use special brushes that much otherwise I would've shared them. I'll save some inbetween stages of the better pieces I'll hopefully do.

Goro: this ArtRage stuff looks cool, but i have some serious issues... it's too slow for me to draw and it makes strange lines at the end (or in the middle) of my strokes (this lines all point upwards-left)... i don't see why... maybe it doesn't like my genius mousepen tablet...
Garma: isn't the 'show your technique' thread about those web-tools you can draw online with and show your process to everyone? that's fun indeed, but i think this thread has some different purpose.

and maybe it's an idea to merge this thread with the "show your technique" thread art2 started?
Blame Erilaz, eheheh...
I agree to keep those threads seperate, maybe change the title of the "show your technique" thread.
And I think that further thoughts about this be discussed in the topic suggestion thread or some other thread created for suggestions etc regarding the Sketch Forum.
Just to keep this thread tidy and clean, so you don't have to wade through lots of text before finding a tut.

hey goro i have a question about photoshop i noticed in your videos and things how you use the eye dropper and change colors but how do you get the colors to blend together with the brush so smooth like a smudge tool?
oh i think i get it do you use Opacity jitter with pen pressure?
also one other question how if possible can i make a shortcut to the Color Picker
Garma

ack, yes, you guys are probably right.. :) but I thought.. well the "technique" thread is now of a somewhat limited use (that tool is fun for a while but that's it in my opinion) so I thought maybe we could make the subject somewhat more broad or something..
forget it :) i'm happy anyways.

also one other question how if possible can i make a shortcut to the Color Picker
I believe there was a post about it not to long ago in the photoshop section and the answer was no there isn't a shortcut to the colour picker.
When in brush mode, you can select the Color Picker by holding Alt.
Don't know if this answers your question...
Mooki don't know about the strange lines in artrage...sorry :(

also one other question how if possible can i make a shortcut to the Color PickerYes it's the Opacity jitter set to pen pressure right! Then you can mix the colors on your
canvas with alt key when brushtool is selected (as art2 already said).
you can change the brush size on the fly with [ and ] keys in europe it's , or .
But in CS you can completely customize your keyboardsetup.
Ah and art2 if you or someone else makes some tutorials I could add them in my first post.

Inspired by the excellent .wpe's I downloaded OpenCanvas ,however when I try to draw, the Ink is appearing offset to the left from the cursor. The ink would appear to be proportionate to where im drawing on the pad but the cursor is off to the right a bit. Ive mucked about in the tablet properties to no avail
Im using Intuos2 and dual screen on a Radeon 9700pro, Photoshop CS works fine but I seem to recall having the same problem with an Alias Sketchbook demo.
Anyone got any ideas? Sorry if its the wrong thread but theres lots of Opencanvas users here obviously :/
the odd thing is ive just noticed I can choose file options etc no prob its only when i go into the draw window that the cursor is thrown off

Hey J_Grieve, I had the same problem. I also have a dualscreen system running. I mentioned you also have a dualscreen running, so I disabled my 2nd monitor. And yep, now it's working. It's a pity that it won't work with the 2nd screen enabled, I have that 2nd screen for this kind of programs :( Anyway, I hope that this will help you.

I started painting digital in April 2004. Have a lot of fun with it! But I think Animation is

I really enjoyed your tutorials. Thanks for putting so much effort to helping newbies. I surely learned something and will try to use that in the future. I just bought a Wacom, but I'm not yet comfortable with using it. But now I have some more input and will practice.
It's also always good to see other people working with programs, I didn't know these shortcuts and I think they will help. I like your way of sketching. Also your traditional sketches on your website...
So, thanks again, I think I'll go home now and play with this opacity jitter :)

Hey everyone,
Been visiting these forums for a while now and never really posting anything, just thought I'd
try and help-- Seems like a couple people were interested in color picking in PS, and most have tablets too...so I thought I'd share my technique: I've set my stylus buttons to ALT and CTRL Z.....I've found this to work very nicely for both Painter and PS, ALT will color pick
and CTRL Z will undo, just makes your painting go a little smoother in my opinion.
If your strictly into OC you can set one of the tool buttons to shift for color picking instead.
Hope this helps and thanks to everyone who's helped me and shared with their experiences.

In openCanvas you can also set a pen button to be "Ctrl+Alt" to adjust pen size. Is there any way to do that w/ PS? I know in PS the "[" and "]" keys can do this but this would waste 2 buttons (and my little old Graphire2 has no hotbuttons on the pad itself).
One more question about pen setting preferences...do you guys prefer to have pen pressure set to opacity or size or both?
And lastly, as if there wasn't enough drawing apps out there here's another good one. Its called Pixia (no, you dont have draw by pixels, this isnt TheDraw). Its got a nice AutoSmooth feature than will straighten your crooked strokes (how much so can be adjusted in Prefs). Also, if you set the Density to be controled by the tablet you get a nice pencil look. Give it a try. Here's the website: http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/index.html
Thanks for all the great tips!

Hi there,
Another thing I find really usefull on occasions is the setup of flow for brushes in PS. It works like the hardness of your tool.
Also, the percentage of radius(or something like that) of the tool is also nice if you like to paint thicker without punching through your tablet.
For drawing tutorials, check feng zhu(or something similar) site. It was www.artbyfeng.com (http://www.artbyfeng.com) I think.

If it's not to much to ask, could anybody point me to some theory or tutorials about using colour for effect. I'm really new to anything painterlike. I only used pencil/pen and paper to crystalise ideas and get the kinks out of my system.
Thanks a bunch.
PS: for more hands on tutorials There are a lot it seems in the painter forum. But I don't think I'm ready for those yet. I would like to develop more basic understanding first.
PPS:indeed very nice video, also funny I might say to try and follow the cursor over the screen. Some nifty tricks you showed me there. Thanks.

Hehe, quite a nice topic. Pretty odd I only came to notice it was here just yet.
Anyway, does anybody know the shortcut key to the Color Mixer in PS? I've been browsing the shortcutkey menu but couldn't really find it...
Thanks in advance! :D
jmBoekestein well when I started to do digital paintings last year in April I didn't know
much about using colors and stuff. Same as you I always drew with pencil and paper.
I started to do a lot of paintings using photoreference or from life. Do each day
at least one painting. Spend 30min or 1h for each painting and after a couple of reference
paintings you will get a feeling to use the colors.
The most important thing is to choose the colors by yourself without picking the colors from the reference picture using the eyedroppertool.
It helped me a lot. Try it out!
Ephesus
hmm...it is divx 5.0.5 maybe reinstall the codec or something....or use the VLC media player
I think it's freeware and includes all codecs.
Lonely PixelColor Mixer? Do you mean the Color Picker? well I'm afraid there is no shortcut for that.

Hey Guys,
I'm pretty new to sketching, but i've tried out a few programs; I was just wondering, if you were using say, Photoshop, what brushes do you guys use (other than the stuff already posted by Ballistic and Goro...wonderful guys :)
I'm just intrigued as to how people get the styles they create :]
paperclip
03-16-2005, 10:58 AM
The eyedropper colour picker? Is that what you want? The shortcut for that is 'I'. as in I-dropper. lol.
paperclip:
I think he meant the color picker....wher you can choose your colors.
You know when you click on the color box in the toolbar on the left.
you can activate the eydroppertool while using the brushtool by holding the
Alt key btw. But it was said several times in this thread I guess
Matt_Forcum
03-16-2005, 02:32 PM
Goro: I got it eventually.
To the other concerned with color:
I am not a master myself. (unlike Goro...humble as he may be.) But I try to do a quick painting once a day I dont spend more than 30-45 minutes on it, and it always ends up very sloppy, But I always focus on accomplishing something, Usually my primary focus is creating a mood through the use of color. So I will just start throwing some colors down with a general idea of what I want to create and just go with it. eventually you start to kinda see how light works with color, how color can determine the amount of detail nessicary, etc.
try this: Grab a photo from the internet of something that is cool (a building, lanscape, a cat, whatever.) Bring that photo into photoshop and start painting over it in a seperate layer. Try using only monochromatic colors and see what you come up with. Limiting your color pallete is a good way to force yourself to be more creative with your choices and it is also a very good way to observe the influence light has in the photo.
Again, I am no master, but thats how I do it and it certinly helps me alot.

Goro u are trully an incredible atrist. its just amazing.
i have a question- (i learn phtoshop 7 at the moment), why and how do u change the image size all the time (talking about the jungle video).
another question is that i have wacom tablet, but for some reason the "pen pressure" option doesnt work for me, any idea why it isnt working?
Hi Spiritwalker.
I'm not changing the image size. I just zoom in and out. It helps me to see the painting
as a whole thing. The overall balance of the objects in the painting etc.
If I work on details for a while I lose the vision for the whole image. So I need to zoom
out to see it as a whole thing.
About the pen pressure....well I know only one solution. Try to use the latest wacom
drivers. Maybe it solves the prob.
cheers!

thanks for replying, started to use zoom in and out. another question if it is suppose to be pixel when i zoom in (it is isnt it?). got the wacom working and im right now painting my first painting(first thing i work on more then 10 minutes).
is there anywhere where i can get good brushes? i have phtoshop 7
thanks alot, im a huge fan of your work.
I'm not sure if I get you right but yes. Photoshop is a pixel based application not vector.
So if you work in low resolutionns it pixels when you zoom in.
For my speedpaints I use resolutions around 800x600
For detailed images I go for 5000x4000 ore something.
Hmm...the best brush is the standart hard edged round brush imo.
Don't know where you can get brushes for 7. sorry...

Goro, first my compliments on your work! Your work has great atmosphere even through simple lines and shapes.
I was wondering: do you have a clear idea of what the image is going to look like before starting, or do you simply start sketching random shapes which you then use as an inspiration?
Hi Thekkur!
THnx for your comment!
I do both...for example I had a clear Idea on my master and servant challenge.
But for my speedpaints I often just start to block in some colors. Most of the time
I have a basic idea of the environment. But it's a really rough image in my head.
So I start painting and suddenly I get inspired by the shapes just as you say.
As I painted the little jungle tutorial I had only in mind to paint a junglelike scene....everything
else comes spontaneous.
Sometimes I have a clear image in my head but I also have problems to paint the image
exactly as I want to.
And some other day I'm not inspired at all and I can't paint anything....then I just block
in some random shapes and start to shade them. Then I get inspired by the shapes again.
So it all depends on my mood and my motivation.
Cheers!
Goro

Please let me know
Go here (http://www.cgtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=130). Roberto posts new sketchtopics every day. Each topic has it's own thread.
1. do a sketch for the topic
2. upload your sketch on a server. (if you do not have webspace there are plenty
of sites giving you free webspace. Get an account and upload the sketch)
3. reply to the topic you sketched for providing some information like how long did it
take to finish your sketch and which software and hardware you used and include your sketch.
example:
photoshop + wacom about 2 hours
[your sketch]
Oh and don't forget to add some witty remarks too :D
Enjoy the stay MoX&Dana.

Goro,
just learning to get to grips with my first tablet - the looking at the screen rather than the paper and having to change the angle I work at - was finding it most frustrating and disheartening so stumbling onto this thread from the Blender forum has been a godsend. You and the others who have posted links and tuts here have been a help to me beyond measure. Must practice, practice, practice !!!
Looking forward to posting some work in the daily sketch forum v. soon.
Thanks again,

Here are the brushes I use. I wish people find their own ways of using them. Some of the brushes seem quite obvious how to use them and on what but some of them are quite handy for many things.. Here's a pic of most of the brushes used in some weird way:
http://koti.mbnet.fi/teimo/erikoinen/other/erikoinenbrushes.jpg
And here's the abr-file (http://koti.mbnet.fi/teimo/erikoinen/other/Erikoinen-brushes.abr) . Done in PS CS, don't know if they work in older versions. [Filesize: 440kB]
Some of the default Adobe-brushes are included in this set since I do use some of them too. If Goro sees it necessary, put this on the first page too. I mean, Goro has my permission to do that but if these doesn't qualify, then you just don't do it. :)

Anytime I do quick sketches, I'll always use the same two custom brushes. One is a scatterbrush for laying out colour extremely fast, and the other is a solid brush with other dynamics & pen pressure checked for details such as eyes, hair, and highlighting the edges, or just sharpening up what I've done with the scatterbrush. I select a background colour (which in most cases is in the blue hue slight-desat range). I take that colour, and on the side I lay out a darker version of it, and a lighter version of it, so I can easily dip into it when highlighting and laying shadows. I'll pick a completely random colour, often a purple/orange/red and lay it out on the side as well so I can blend it in from time to time in different areas and the bg.
Using the scatterbrush I can quickly lay down the colour for the basic shape of the area I want, and then go over it with the solid brush for the sketch, and then using the scatterbrush start laying shadows and colour wherever I need to. Nothing (in my opinion) makes painting faster than doing it that way. I also tend to keep it in one layer, and I use the shortcuts for increasing/decreasing brush size. And I blend by hitting alt [often] and dipping while I go. I like blending the background into the foreground as well (using the scatterbrush once again) to give it some atmosphere. That's my technique anyhewt.

Sure. I'm at work (working hard as you can clearly see), but when I get home I'll show you exactly which brushes I use. I almost feel guilty using the scatterbrush because it lays the colour out so fast, it feels as if it's doing all of the work.

To get the brush on the right, I started with a solid photoshop default brush, checked other dynamics and pen pressure. I typically have the flow at 100% and I mess with the opacity depending on what I'm doing.
The brush on the left I did everything I did with the brush on the right, except I also checked scattering. You can play with the scatterbrush to find a "scatter" that you like. I find it extremely helpful with laying down colours quickly for easy blending. Hope that was a good enough explanation, but let me know if you really were looking for a better one. I can't show anyone how to paint, but at least for me, having the right brushes certainly does make it easier.

i feel if one uses lil bit of scattering in normal brushes ( like ur example on the right) it gives more natural look...
i'm interested in the result of the brush you have shown on the left...it would be nice if you can post some example image(s) where you have used that brush.

For my speedpaints I use resolutions around 800x600
For detailed images I go for 5000x4000 ore something.
Goro
Hello , I have simple question to You: for high image res. use 5000x4000 in what dens. 300 PPI or higher, 8Bit // 16Bit for color? And what a computer You are using ?
Goro i'm really greatful to u for this share.
btw can u tell me what max. and minimum size i can attatch in daily sketch.

well, 5000x4000 pixels is a constant size, doesn't matter if you're working at 72dpi, 300dpi, or even more (or less)..
Just try this: create a new file in photoshop, 800x600@10dpi. another one 800x600@300dpi; there's no difference except the relative size for print.
For the last two questions, I'll just let Goro explain it, as he surely knows it better than anyone else ;) (personally, i'd like to add that you got a lot more color depth in 16 bits pictures, only your eye may not be able to make the difference between every color shade (65536 levels for each color channel instead of 256 for 8 bit pics). So, speaking for myself, 8bit is enough for sketching, even for illustrations).
Hey, Im dunno if anyone is intrested, but I did this one today in painter..
And I had "by accident" started to record the screen, and forced myself to do
alittle better cause of that :)

Thanks for all the help, guys! This is a truly great thread. Seeing how other artists work never gets old.
I was thinking about one of the problems with Photoshop's current brush engine--you can't invert pressure sensitivity so that, for instance, lighter pressure makes the brush larger. This would be useful for some things. Imagine lightly sketching in outlines and/or details, then pressing harder to make the brush larger and fainter. Unfortunately, there's currently no way to pull this off. However, you can set "color jitter" and "size jitter" to pen pressure and then use white as your foreground color and black as your background color. This gives approximately the same effect, although the brush is opaque the whole way through.

I would love it if someone could make a watercolor style tutorial. I think its one of the least used styles for cg, but I bet some really awesome stuff could happen with it.

Hey Goro!
I have been trying to get into more color theory and matte painting lately, I love learning from people who are great at what they do.
Thank you so much for these tutorials they are crazy informative.
Ive got one qick question, when you were painting i noticed you didnt actually change the value's of the colors manually... it could have been just the speed cap of the program.
But is there a hotkey or a set of hotkeys to adjust the Hue/saturation or lght to dark of the color you have selected?

The site you made was useful, I was surprised you didn't focus on the eyes first since it's what gives the person the "character"..but still very useful

Forgive me if this has been asked already, but what brush settings should I be using? I'm talking shape dynamics, other, or whatever. I read cyperx's post on her 2 different settings, but I'm still clueless. My brushes turn wachy when I turn on these settings. I keep reading about setting opacity to pen pressure, but where's that at? I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out what my opacity should be or when do I change it. I've read that settings are changed throughout the process? To focus on my question, to get a painted feel what should by brushes be set to? I have ps7 and I'm using a intuous 3. All these tutorials go through midtones and highlights, but what opacity or controls are best to use?

Hi everybody, I'm not sure if it has been posted before, but this link is providing me very useful start and I usually don't post anything unless it's high quality. I originally found that through the deviantart's news for a rock tutorial video and it came with guess what??? More videos and brush sets!!! Nice eh?

I am very interested in seeing your creations using his brush sets, I'm very curious lol! It's awesome!

i'm sick as a dog, but i finally made my first "tutorial"
i hope you guys will understand what i'm saying. since i'm pretty fuzzy in my head from the fever i can't seem to find proper english words....or any proper words for that matter. i promise next one will be better
you can look at the stream but if you think the quality suck, then i recommend downloading the file since it's better quality then the stream.
if you download the file, i also recommend downloading the KMPlayer which can play every codec available without actually installing it. best player on the planet IMHO. based on the legendary VLC player and WMP Classic
http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/
anyway, here's the video and once again, sorry for my feverish/fuzzy/dreamy commentary

Those speedpaintings video's.. as a beginner... I cant learn from them! :( It's to fast to see what they are actually doing! The video from Creeto is much better :D
I'm really looking for more stuff about that. When somebody wants to make a tutorial, please show us what tools you use (what layers, brushes, effects, etc) and don't do a speedpainting.

TrueCapuchin asked me in my sketchbook to explain my workflow i used when i painted "Adventure Land" (it's in my sketchbook). since i'm bad with words i made a quick tutorial. unfortunately it's without music or voice over but i hope it will show what he wanted know.
the video is about 18 minutes in 200% speed. original time was about 40 minutes
