i am making a texture for an old asian teacup, and it has this cracked like glaze which covers it, with the exception of the areas it is painted on. also there is a gold just around the rim of the teacup and other touches as well along other parts of the teacup.

what layer would i apply the glaze? it has somwhat of a mosaic uneven cracked tiled look. so i was thinking it would make a bump map but since the cracks are very much on the surface (scathing almost) that i would just use a very thin light gray ( would that be low value?).

for the gold.. do i apply it to the specular layer?

anyways.. thanks for your help

let me know if this is not clear

i have attached the original glaze texture picture.. which is hi rez and you are welcome to use.. as well as a pattern made texture for the cup. now what to do? i have tried applying it to the color map.. that works ok.. but does not give me the cracks (which are very slight.. but noticeably there. I dont know what layer to apply it to either... any help or workflow ideas are appreciated. :)

If understand you correctly I would do the following. In Photoshop I use several layers, for the different maps.

The cracked texture you showed here doesn't really lok like cracks to me, they seem more to be going outward than inward. To make cracks I usually use a photo, and change the layer blending mode for it (overlay maybe), I make sure that only the dark cracks show. An alternative is to paint the cracks by hand with a 1 pixel size, but for this texture it would be very time consuming.

I would paint the gold rim on the texture itself or make a separate gold material, attached to the rim polygons, if that would be possible. (Color map) Try to not use the cracks in your color map and see how it works.

Bump map: Use a very fine bump for the gold and a very fine setting for the cracks. You can control the settings from the darkness/whiteness of the texture or the settings in the program or both naturally.

Spec color map: Use both the cracks and gold rim texture, how shiny is the gold? Sometimes the gold is a little matte, especially if it's an old cup.

Reflection map: Use a higher setting for the glaze and a lower for the gold. Or make the gold a little darker in the b/w texture.

Hope I haven't forgotten anything here and that this helps some.
