View Full Version : my robot "Crush"

ok, just called him "crush", because this was just the only thing, which came to my mind. It took about 3 hours painting in Photoshop and is my 6-7 attempt in painting/sketching...I am starting to take it serious, because it still makes fun...(wacom3 a4 orderd, 10min ago..:-D ). This image was drawn on a WacomA6.
So, please let me know what you think about....i will try to improve the image...
Thanks so far !!

and...ah...if you ask, what he is holding in his left hand...ähm..a cylinder...yeah...well, thats it...it`s a metallic cylinder...perhaps someone has a good idea, what he is holding, without changing the hand...

No real criticism at this stage. I see a robot but don't see any underlying story/action going on and the robot doesn't bring anything to mind by himself. But, as I said, at this stage that is quite all right. As you refine this robot try to give us a feel for his motivation, what he might be thinking, who he might be using that cylinder on, where he is going, where he has been. Hope I have been helpful and not confusing.

I think, i got what you mean. I will do an surrounding/background and a kind of motivation. I think he could pull on a big switch....for a machine...perhaps...and someone just calls "Stop" from his behind....(the direction he is looking at....)
sounds ok for me !
Thanks for the tip!

ThomasKl

so, he`s a robot in a recycling-Factory and working on a destroying/crushing machine....
The Switch is done....So, now i need the machine, and something, which interrupted him...

Hi Thomas!

So you also started painting like me? :)
I´m a painting-newbie but I think you´ll need some more contrast. It´s a bit flat now. Make the dark areas darker and then add bright highlights and "reflection-lines". This will give you a more metallic look.

nice to hear from you again ! :-) yeah...you could be right with this...i think i will try to make it more metallic...it`s one of my first images, so any critics are welcome !
Thanks so far...

ok, little update :

ThomasKl
01-07-2005, 01:35 PM
i think i will try to paint a high-res Version of his head in the next few days...make it as realistic as i can get it......

ThomasKl
01-09-2005, 01:03 PM
ok, so today i started to draw a close-up version of the head, because i like the concept. This is my actual version. I am not quite sure about the eyes...something looks a little strange around that area....

The concept looks great! Maybe you put some more stuff on his neck like dampers, cables and so on? Or should he be more a cartoon-like character?
Have fun with coloring & shading! Think about highlights and reflections!

:-)

thanks, yeah - i will add some cable and strange technical-voodoo stuff. I am not quite sure, if i can archive a photorealistic painting, so i think it will become a little bit cartoon-style. Perhaps somewhere between cartoon and realistic.
I won`t forget the reflection-stuff :-D !!
Thanks, so far !
I couldnt wait for painting colors...so i just started...:

mmhh..well, now i don`t know if i should use some blood. Somebody got an idea, if this is too much trash-like ? Reminds me of the movie death-machine...I am not sure about the blood...

Thats nice dude, nice updates. Looking alot better than the original peice (that was pretty nice 2). I like the textures in the previous update #14, the ones used on the sholder, great stuff. The close ups are great, the blood around the mouth looks cool, but how will you incorperate it into the scene?

Good job so far, looks great.

ThomasKl
01-10-2005, 02:27 PM
Thanks,
well, i figured out, that i used the textures too early, so i removed these again. They are still there, but the layer is hidden. Textures will be the last step in that image. I think, i won`t set him into scene this time. It will be just a portrait in the end.(i think...) I will try to improve the shading and change the background. Then, there will be some more detail and line improvements... The only question is, if the blook is just cool, or more like "out-of-date" trash...

well, thanks so far...updates will come...

ThomasKl
01-10-2005, 08:44 PM
Nothing really happened. Just added a small antenna at the head and a little Highlight at the right side....

ok, so far for now. I added some colored lighting. Next thing will be the background. I think i will go out and take some nice refrence photos...
any critics are still welcome !

Very nice robot you got here :) I really like it so far.

Maybe improve those bloodstains on his teeth they look a liitle bit to painterly.
I like how the robot react to the background light, maybe push this even further.
And try to avoid to make the background too blurry, but as I can see in the progress you get more detail here from pic to pic... keep working :arteest:

Thanks for that tip with the colors....well, i try to push it a little further...add some saturation and make it clearer from where the light/color comes....
yeah, the blood is a little bit too much "smudged....". I will try to improve.
Detail in the Background is a good idea....but i think i can`t spend so much more time in that image...(seen it too long...:-( ) ..but i`ll try,,,
Thanks,

ThomasKl
01-11-2005, 06:52 PM
so, reworked the blood, tightend the color-bleeding....some more little background-stuff...but more will come....
Thanks for that Grugi - worked fine !

Looks definitely better. I know how much hard work you put in this picture, and the longer you work on it the more difficult it is to see flaws or things to improve.

I´m actually painting a girl, my first try to paint something realistic(!?)
I think I totally failed, maybe you take a look and let me know what you think about it? (see link in my signature) I have been staring for too long to this picture and I know there is something totally wrong with it, but I cant figure out what it is.

Looking forward to updates, this will be good in the end for sure :)

Looks great :buttrock:

But maybe you have a close look at his nose-hole

http://www.cantarel.de/zahn.jpg

The lower part of the nose should hav a small bending because of the two teeth below.

I`ll take a look at your baby ,grugi ! (tomorrow, too - too tired now...) But thanks for that feedback guys...you`re really helping me !
:-)

Good night !

Whoa, you're putting a lot of work into this, I like seeing the progress. Thanks for posting this.

ThomasKl
01-12-2005, 07:42 AM
thanks,
well, i am surprised, too - how this image runs through progress...Never thought, that i come that far, this time...I just worked on the nose-hole as Andre said, but now i look at the image and i dont know, whats next....no idea, what i can improve/add/rework/etc....Perhaps it`s soon time to call it finished....

ThomasKl
01-12-2005, 08:55 AM
ok, i think this is it now...:
if somebody got an idea, then please tell it, otherwise, it`s the final version...

so, after finished developing crush, and doing a close up, i am now thinking of an image that shows crush in a scene...
Well, i am not quite sure what kind of character he really is...is he good, - is he evil ?
He could be an industry-robot, became bored of just only screwing parts together....freed himself, and decided to fight against the most evil aliens on an alien planet....http://www.thomasklieber.de/archive/Crush_new.jpg
ok, somebody got a better idea ? ;-)

super cool...I love WIP threads...I look@ page 1 and it's like "hmmm that is a cool design but its all badly shaded" then u get to the final page and see ppl giving so much praise and see the final image and you're like "wha...what??! that's the same image??? coooool!!!"

good stuff.

The scene itself isn´t bad. But maybe you can improve it if you change the angle and use a kind of fisheye lense so it becomes more "extreme". Put your camera down to the ground looking up to the robot so it becomes more giant. At the moment it is "just" a side view of a scene. You can add much more action to it! :bounce:
Just a spontaneous suggestion :)

I like the alien fighting scene. But mabe you could give him a better weapon and make his arms just a little bit bigger or give it more force in his punch because he looks kind of weak.

Reminds me of the guy with the metal jaw from "He-Man"
Remember him?
He was cool.
This bot has character.
Good work.

thanks guys...

well, andre, i think you`re right...i will try to make it more dramatic. the perspective was just good for finding an idea of the image...perhaps i will make a quick 3d layout of the scene to get an idea for the camera angle..

Yeah...I think that guy from he-man really inspired me...without that i noticed it...let`s take a look....TRAP JAW ! Yeah - got him: :-)
http://www.thomasklieber.de/archive/trapjaw_f.jpg
well, i think i had him....i think it was an evil one !

And yeah ! That punch needs more power ! hey - he`s a fighting machine !
Thanks for advice ! Perhaps i can post a new image tonight....

(and got my Intuos3 A4, today via UPS.....can´t wait for trying....) :-DDD

Hahaha. Yeah thats him. I remember that guy. I had him as a child. Wait a minute, i dont mean that I "had" him as in gave birth, i mean I owned him. Wait a minute, i dont mean that I "owned" him as in dominated him...... well you know what I mean.

Cool.
