Hi,

I'm pretty much traiing into texturing these times and i wanted to show you all the steps i'm going to do (it's my first head texturing...)...i need of course some advises and some critics about my UVs, my model and my textures...

So it's a head i made some times ago and the topology looked quite clean so i decided to go with him...
Now i unwrapped it and i got those things in the hands :

I need some input guys C&C are welcome !

I reckon the wireframe looks pretty damn good!

I don't understand your question though, just paint the thing in photoshop and then apply the map and ask for crits then.

Keep it up.

Heck....

That UV Unwrap is better than I can do. I still haven't been able to pull a detailed models wireframe out like that. I haven't tried faces...becuase I'm not a character designer, but even simple things get tricky.

Just paint your texture right on that wireframe in PS, and use as your texture for the face mesh.

--Good start.

Here's the first try with painting skin...i have big trouble making wrinkles in good directions... how you guys do paint them ?...the wrinkles you see here are from a photo i manipulated and inserted between my colors layers...

there's also ofcourse bump and specular map...but they're just photoshop manipulation of the color map...greyscale then adjust brightness and contrast...

Now i just changed the renderer...the last one was rendered with Maya + GI Joe...

This one with Mental Ray + SSS Shader just to see how the texture+skin shader reacts...

can I see a hypershade viewport of the shader? I cant get the damn thing to work well, also if you can show connections as well that would be nice, thanks if you can. As far critiques go, Id say right now it looks like his face was cut up heavily. The face has I think 14 different dermis's (skin types) that make it change greatly. Like under the eyes, its more puffy, and oily as well, however around the chin theres stubles of hair and what not. Even if it is a cartoon, the skin still needs to corrispond correctly. So yea =)

Ok i understood i'm gonna make more variation to skin and try to correct this wrinkle problem...

Here's the MiSSS shader network :

Try think of the nose and eyes as springs of water that the wrinkles spray out of. Then you will have your road map.

I use z brush so I have avoided the whole unwrap drama.

Keep it up man.

Looks great, thanks for sharing your shader setup.
The latest render looks really neat.

The colors are good, but the creases should follow the contours/features of the face. That way the folds are more apparent, the eyes gain more depth etc.

Cool style, i like the detail you used for the cheeks, you should give the forehead a little bit more detail.

Good luck

I have a differene approah to things with texturing, in that in my opinion, if the character is a cartoony one, such as yours, your better off making the texture map VERY subtle, otherwise it takes away from the overall style of the character, trying to pass it off as sometihng more "real" when what really is trying to be done is suspension of belief. Shrek did this wonderfully, take a look at the human characters skin in shrek, good reference for the cartoony look! Again just my opinion. Keep up the good work though!
