I posted this on the general discussion forum also but i thought some people may be interested in the topic too. Forgive me if this is inappropriate.

Hello some of you may remember a while ago I started a thread about a renderfarm i was going to start. Well it looks like i am finally ready to go ahead with it. At first there will only be 10+, 3.0ghz, P4 w/Hyperthreading, 512mb ram. This will upgrade to 20+ quickly if all goes well. No need to put all my eggs in one basket.

So now i need to figure out which software i should put on the renderfarm. I am definately putting Cinema4D on the renderfarm, as i already own it. Now i am torn between Maya 6/Turtle Renderer or 3dStuidoMax6/VRay.

I would very much like peoples opinions on which software he/she would like to see supported by the renderfarm.

Also i would be interested to hear people's opinions on the internet connection i should use. So far i have looked at DSL @ 1.5M/384K and Broadband at similar speeds. I will also be looking into a T1 connection pricing.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

Good luck on your venture danb,

As far as your choice in software have you seen this http://www.postforum.com/forums/read.php?f=6&i=112281&t=112267 ,other than that if it's a for profit renderfarm check which apps have the most demand for rendering.

Again, good luck
Sam

Danb,

It's good to hear you're going ahead with the farm. We can always use more resources. How do you plan to charge for use of the farm? Will it be by the GHz*hr (or better yet by the Cinebench*hr), or a subscription like Renderking?

As for rendering software, I can't really comment on the other engines you mentioned, but I would like to see support of some important Cinema plugins. For me, two of these are xFrog and Ozone. I'm sure others can come up with more. Good luck!

Concerning your choice Maya/3Dmax etc:

Danny Stubbs from the Renderking farm had to remove Maya from his farm because according to Alias renderfarms are not allowed to operate for profit using Maya rendering software

edit

I didn't see Sammer already pointed to the thread with this information.

Is that slow connection going to be feasible?

Lets say someone render a 3 minute animation, 30fps = 5400 frames. 2 megs each and you have 11 gigs to upload. Thats 4 and a half days up uploading back to the customer, which will prevent you from downloading a new file to the farm during that period.

Have you checked the bandwidth limits your isp imposes? (many are not publically stated, but they will cut you off if you use it too much)

jack,

i am not sure if the situation has changed but when ozone first came out i am pretty sure it had probleme with support NET rendering. i do remember looking into this and seem to find that the answer - if you know more or can point me to some info that states otherwise i will look into ozone again to see what the status is.

i actually had a hard time getting answers from that company and very poor email responses and communication.

thanks for any pointers to resolution,

well scratch that question i guess i just checked their site and it does specify NET rendering - so i can add this to the list of purchase in the very near future.

when ozone 2.0 first came out i had conflicting reports from users who used it... and i could not get confirmation - since then nobody has reqested it so i have not looked further into it.

don't forget you can feel free to send ideas like this to me anytime and as budget allows i will do what i can.

Thanks imashination i actually meant to put the higher speed for the DSL option in my first post also. It is 7mb u/l , d/l give or take a few kbs. I would very much like to get the T1 connection.

I am going to continue to shop around a little more for the internet connection.

And thanks for the tip about the bandwidth. I haven't forgotten about that and its going to be one of the first questions i ask once i start zeroing in on the connection i like.

Hi Dann,

I guess I just assumed Ozone would be compatible with Net Render, but that's good to hear that it works. I agree that their tech support is weak. They seemed shocked when I complained more than a year ago that their default sun doesn't cast shadows! Now I just use Ozone as a deluxe sky shader, and it works well for that. The interface is wacky though.

yes i noticed this funktion in R9 and i allready used the Film Offset XY settings in 8.5 to tile images for net without this tool but imatige will help u combine and manage those scenes for net... only a hint not a musthave(tm) software :)
