I would like to have a realistic glass with some whiskey and some ice. I have the models and have played with Banji, but without success. My glass is soso OK, but the whiskey always looks like plastic.....I will post a pic as soon as I can!

I bet Mdme is the first to answer?

Personally I'd rather have a real Glass of whiskey and ice :)

I'll get the pic up as soon as I can.....but Kai...the reason I cannot compare the image to the real thing together is cos I drank the whiskey.......!

Here is the pic...there are one or two overlaps where I need to smooth points out....

the virtual whiskey is too reflective for a start, it looks a bit too polished... come to think of it everything in teh scene looks a bit high gloss... you're suffering from too many reflections. The glass should look a little bit more refractive, try to get those dark bits you get with glass in there, it's also a bit too reflective, or rather too evenly reflective. the whiskey itself looks a little cloudy (triple malt perhaps?) remember that this should have a lower refractive index than the glass as it's less dense. it's hard to tell in the scene... but i don't see many specular highlights or shadows... so i don't know what your lighting rig is.... try bringing one or two of the lights around so you get some of that lovely reflected streakeffect on the glass, and switch their shadows on. you need to darken the whiskey some too... i can't really tell you how to do that without looking at the texture itself, but i'd suggest lowering the colour ammount on it, and just darkening the colour that goes into the transparency a little. that's pretty much all i can suggest at the moent without playing around with the textures directly... hope that this is of some help.

Seems that the "additive" parameter is active in the transparency channel... anyway try also this (that's for Lightwave but it's useful)

Wow, that was quick...hmm...I have ditched the Banji shader as stated above as I never seem to get anywhere with it. I am now using only basic materials.
For the whiskey I added a little fog, but have now removed and added an orangy colour to the transperancy. The refraction of the whiskey is 1.2, and the glass 1.6.
I have also ditched my lighting in favour of a general lighting setup. 1 spot, 1 omni with falloff and a tube light to try and get the long specualr effect....shadows were on but there were too many lights (I was trying for an alround lighting rig) and they were blown out.
I have added a slight, long in the y-axis bump to break up the reflection a little. also a noise map for the specular, to break things up and add a grubier look.

What about enviroment maps....?

Glass and liquids, especailly both together are always a problem for me! Here is my last attempt. I don't have access to my server from work, no FTP, so I can't upload the scene! Could E-mail it though?

Thanks for the link!

try this to understand how to gain optimal reflections and vertical speculars

Cool, thanks. :p
Still playing......

Hmmm, getting there, but the whiskey is still not the best!

Too black zones on the glass, try increasing ray depth, shadow depth and reflection depth from the rendering menu (i usually use 25 ray, 19 reflection, 19 shadow)

Heres one I tried with a HDRI type image, quick render low accuracy...Just trying upping the values for rays etc...

could u explain the shader/material for your ice ?

a thought just occured to me on the whisky thing... are you using BhodiNUT Buffy on the specular, reflective and colour surfaces? Because if you weren't then that might help tone down the rather bright quality of the whiskey and make it look a little more solid.

I will try ASAP! Thankyou again Mdme.....

For the Ice I simply use a baisc Banji type glass with low reflection and some bump. There are also some spheres inside the cubes with the same material attached, to add depth.

Download the file as it is here: http://www.neilyb.de/glass.zip
there will be a pic missing, this was just for the HDRI thing..

hey neilyb, you might allrdy know about this but if not maybe give it a try for the whiskey - http://www.nextlimit.com

Yeh, but I don't want to have to pay for something that Cinema is capable of with a little work!
The scene containing the glass will have DOF and looks like the glass will be blurred, so I am not too worried about perfection. But it would still be nice for future reference to know how to do it!

Here is the final pic without DOF.

Looks good! I think the wood textures still need work, though.

Er....no, Santa can bring me Shave if he feels generous....I used BGS hair plugin which creates polys (or you can use the splines in conjunction with solid splines (but this takes A LONG TIME to render!)) there are approx 245,000 polys in this scene...

The wood manages for me, the very final image will have DOF (I am rendering out the scene without the VICE and FLY......yes it's a vice not a large battery operated device, as was once suggested!!!:scream:

I didn't use Radiosity as the people who will put this on a magazne cover prefered a darker, more mysterious look...

The whiskey was an after thought and it will become blurred out, just wanted to make a convincing drink...this was a good scene in which to add some props!

Thanks for the comments...I will post a final image in the relevant forum once the blurring is done.
