View Full Version : ok, here's yet another generic female character.
I know the CG world is already over-saturated with them, but this is my first one, so bear with me. Still in a very early stage obviously.

The ear part from the Joan of Arc tutorial gives good results and is easy to do.
Do you have any reference images for the head? Overall looking good.

Hi jbo,
Looking good so far, but is it me or are her hands way to big? Maybe you should set your viewport angle ot 25 degrees or somin'.
Did I see a private part there? :p If so, it should start further in between the legs, There's pubic bone there for the leg muscles, so there can't be any soft tissue coming through.
Have fun!
yeah, i think it's just the angle that's making her hands look big, though perhaps they could be a bit smaller. as for private part: no. i think it's just the way the smoothed version is not smoothed at the boundry of the model, so where it meets the low res half, some wierd stuff is going on. I think it will go away once i mirror and combine. thanks
hamflank: yeah, thanks for the ear tip. just haven't worked on that part too much yet, but i'll check out that tutorial when i do. as for references, not really. i had an anatomy drawing on my front ortho, but i'm not really using it anymore, cause i wanted her to be shorter/different body type than the drawing. so basically, i just have a couple photos of various people for different features and anatomy books for reference. also used some 3d.sk images for the hands and various parts.

Hey Jesse!
Nice model. Great job so far. I like the solution you came up with on the eye area.
The body proportions look good. I think you got that down. The head may need some reexamining. You should make sure your head proportions are correct before the model gets any heavier.
I feel the top of the head may be too big and the ear is not aligned well with the nose and eyes. Also the back of the head is slopeing too abruptly. You should round this out more.
Just my two cents.
Looking forward to the next updates.
Dino
Hey Dino. I think you're probably right. thank god for lattices http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
here's a small update... i worked on the legs and feet a bit, but they're still pretty rough(especially the feet). I'm not totally happy with the way the hips are looking. any suggestions? also, i seem to really suck at the corners of the mouth, it's always a weak point in every model i've ever done... does anybody know of any tutorials or whatever that have a real good corner o' the mouth? most i've seen just leave it pretty rough.

I would suggest making her nose a little less ''pointy''. And i would make her arms straight, cause the way they look now, isn't possible you can't bend you arm that way, unless it's broken or something ofcourse :p . Besides that it's a good start, good luckt to ya:thumbsup:

Hi, I really like the character of the face, although I do agree that perhaps the nose looks a little hooked (but there's nothing wrong with that I guess), perhaps you have a few too many edge loops round the upper eyelid, but on the other hand but I think the eye shape is great, so don't change it too much!
As far as the corner of the mouth goes, I don't think you've got a problem there, maybe you could try some radical steps, like drag the verts in the corners right into the mouth? but it's all looking good to me, :D
thanks guys
d-tox: you're absolutely right about the arms. i think i may have subconsciously made them that way so that the hands would be easier to model... in fact i might do that on purpose from now on, cause it's easy enough to bend them back when i'm done. anyway, fixed now. as for the nose, i do want to be somewhat hooked, but you're right it's probably too much... i'm gonna wait til i have both halves merged though to fiddle with it, cause once it's smoothed across the middle, the hookness will already be lessened.
here's an update. i worked on the back a bit, and did lots of tweaking. any glaring problems? (or non glaring problems)

ok, finally a little update... i know the collar bone is a bit high. any suggestion how i should dress her?

what program are you modeling in? I can NEVER get a nice looking render like in this last one you just showed. The skin looks great, the shadows are soft...

Looking good so far.
The face is extremely skinny and has a touch of asian, so for clothes I would look at asian style dresses, really form fitting and a lot of color and designs. Then use those as a reference and maybe come up with your own version so that you can keep some uniqueness to match your character.
Only two things are bothering me a bit, the head has a little bit of an alien look, since the top of her head is a bit bigger then the rest. The other is the hair, I think it would look better with a clean cut rather then the layering, the bottom just looks a little thinned out.
Keep 'er coming!

thanks. maya/mental ray. with misss shader and final gather... i dunno though, i might go back to using simple shaders and lights, cause the render time is really getting up there.
The Marshall- thanks for the suggestions, I will definitely change the hair and shape of the head.
