I got this from a friend in the industry. Haven't seen this posted so here it is for your convenience. This is the list of the 10 shortlisted films in the Animated Short Oscar Category for 2005. The screenings will be this weekend and next weekend in LA, SF, and NY where the Academy will be weeding this list down to the 5 nominees. Here's this year's list:It's the Cat
Guard Dog- Bill Plympton
Ryan - Chris Landreth (Cannes Winner)
Suite for Freedom - Acme Filmworks
In the Rough- Blur Studios
Ward 13- StopMotion by Peter Cornwell
Lorenzo- Disney (Annecy Winner)
Fallen Art- Platige Image (same company that produced THE CATHEDRAL)
Gopher Broke- Blur Studios
Birthday Boy- Sejong Park (Siggraph Winner)

Anyone going to the screenings? Anyone willing to predict who the winner will be? Personally, I've seen half of these... so given that, I predict it'll be a repeat showdown from Annecy this past year between "Lorenzo" and "Ryan." What do you think?

I think lorenzo should win. Did you see all the shorts? I think that's important before making a decision ;)

Congratulations to all those nominated, and congratulations to Blur for having two films listed! I think the last time that happened was in 1992 when Nick Park had "The Wrong Trousers" and "Creature Comforts" nominated. "Creature Comforts" was the one that won the Oscar.

Ryan is my favorite, but I didn't see them all.

has anyone seen Fallen Art? i've seen it a few times already. if you haven't i hope you will have the opportunity to watch it soon. all i can say is that it's gorgeous. outstanding. unfortunetaly i haven't seen most of the movies so it's hard for me to make any comparisons. hopefully the winner will be well deserved....

Once upon a time, It did matter, now after 'chub chub',... the juri just need to know who is the sponcer/producer.

I think the Academy should change the rule that disqualifies a film if it is available on the internet. Short animated films done by small studios or independents have no where near the exposure of films like "Lorenzo", which played before a first run film ("Raising Helen", if memory serves).

It would be nice to see some of these films, and not everyone can get to all the festivals to see them.

Saw about %90 of them. Lorenzo was the one that I liked the most. Blur definitely deserves the oscar too with in the rough and gopher , both are incredible shorts. ryan is my least fav of all , but than again I never really liked Chris Landreth shorts , they are technically impressive but are too artsy for me , I am more in tune with possessed cat tails :)

There are 10 films in the shortlist. You saw (about) 90% = 9 animations, so which one is the one, you haven't seen yet? :)

cheers,

I've personally only seen Ward 13 and Fallen Art...both of which were right up my alley in terms of sick, twisted humor.

It really would be nice if there were a DVD of some sort released with all the nominees. By the very nature of these short films, not a lot of people are able to see them, which is a real shame.
