Title: Blood Vessel
Name: Seger
Country: Netherlands
Software: CINEMA 4D

Illustration in a series of seven to accompany a short story. I want to print the story on the carboard kind of paper they use for children's books, with rounded edges.

Cinema and Photoshop.

really cool. it has a painterly look to it. not much to critique really. the splash of blood in the foreground, and the one caused by the paper boat look a little more CG than the rest of the image, but that's really nitpicking. what's the story about?

like the paint effect too... I have to say it doesn't look so much like blood to me :) ...but it might be the scale... I never looked at it from so close, but I would bet there's much more reflection, specular and glossiness on actual real blood... but then again who cares... the pic looks good, if it has the atmosphere you were looking for, it's fair enough to me. Cool pic !

That's cool.

Nice to see some people pushing imaginative ideas around here.

I think it is also the fact that the "blood" is extremly opaque and looks more like paint.

Dont think realism was the main idea...

Great work love it!

If thatīs what you wanted to acchieve, a paint effect, i have nothing against it, just that you could variate the colours, it doesnīt have to be the same red everywhere. You only have light and shadow, why not other kinds of red? Itīs not something you must notice, but you notice if itīs not there.. Splashes need also improovment, if you want them to look real

I really like the concept of this picture!

Almost all 3D-pictures here at CGTalk revolve around physical realism. That's what the software is good at. Like a lot of other 3D-artists who try to use the software to its extends I often don't reach realism completely. With that in mind, plus the everlasting and really interesting discussions about what should be done to make pictures a spitting image of the real world, I try to switch to designing stuff when I know I will get into trouble.
Blood is quite a frothy fluid when shaken but I don't mind. Making the froth would be a painstaking labour and apart from that the illustration would look sinister. So I try and find a workaround to get the right mood across.

Not much to crit and anyway, i don't want to. Not everyday can we see something original, humourous and well managed.
I really like it. Good, good, good fresh air. Breathe...

Edit: Your art was inspiring also and i finally came out with a suggestion. Why not change the red plus sign on the boat to A+, O+ or something similar ?

hehe... great idea... when lookin' at it I though of help message in the bottle. It could make an excellent ad poster encouraging people to "donate" their blood

Love the whimsical paper boat floating to who knows where. Have you tried a dark hole rather than bright light at the back of the tunnel? (Everyone knows that there's Miller Lite at the end of the tunnel).

great image! love the concept!
but heres a small rant for the critics,
for all you peeps who say it doesnt look "realistic", not enough "specular", the splash doesnt look "convincing" need to get a life.
not "everything" needs to be photorealistic, i mean give me a break already, when is the last time you seen a paper boat floating down a blood vessel photo reference?
if all your going to do is try to make everything look like a photo, you should dump your favorite CG program "today" and go get a good camera, "photo" realism at a click of a button.
lets face it...its CG....im getting kind of tired with anatomy nazi's, spec junkys, and bump thugs.
go have a kodack moment somewhere already, :)

It looks cool although it's a pretty simple pics... but the liquid effect is interesting...how is it done ? a plug-in or is it modeled ?

I like the symbolism in this one , excellent pic .

I especially like how it gives a story to an individual
and doesn't force any , though there is a story in the
background for those who want to check it out.

It stands on its own

Finally, sanity. I agree 100% with you, I am so sick of so-called photo realism. I think it's something some artists just need to get out of their system before they can move on, it's like a CG rite of passage. The image above rocks, it's a simple and original idea beautiful executed.

a board book. thats what we call them at the library i work at. That's an awesome picture, i wanna see more of them. Sometimes at work i look at books just to see the kind of art that goes into them (so i pretty much still only like looking at the pictures, lol).

Bee--u--ti--full ! I rarely respond to front page plugs, but I had to on this one. You have made an imaginative and -may I say it- iconic picture here of how to explain what medicins are to a child. This picture takes the often (biased?) view of our internal body as something that is gross or disgusting or violent into something harmless and innocent.

Thanks for posting this artwork.

Normally, I just review/read anatomy based images but this one definitely caught my attention. I agree with the idea of darkness towards the back area, but the lighting sets off the image.

Excellent job!

Well :)

Thanks for all of your very nice comments. This discussion about realism is just what I want. I gave me goose bumps. That might be a nice theme for the next "medical picture". Come to think of it and I mean it. I've been looking at a lip-smeared coffee mug that I dove into as a next picture for the series but it just didn't set sail.

The whole idea of creating a perfectly realistic image in a children's storybook is somewhat ridiculous, as the stylistic changes made during the creation of a piece are often what distinguishes the tone of the story. I love the cavernous interior space and the great directional tilt to the hat, like its just been grabbed by a strong current. My only issue is with the large amount of dark maroon space in the right foreground, this section seems to be an opportunity to draw the viewer into the work, but right now the flattening of this space is keeping me at a distance.

Love it. Very whimsical. It made me laugh. :) Its nice to get a break from seeing goblins, faries, and morbid castles. Not that those aren't cool, it is just nice to see some different type of creativity out there.

very good and original. Don't care about the realism of the blood, the picture works really well as it is.

The whole vein and blood much be a single object right?

I don't know if Blobby Mesh is a plug-in (for Maya?) but the splashes are hand made. In Cinema there is a feature called Metaballs and I have thought about using that for the splashes but I found that I didn't have enough control over the shape. Besides Metaballs uses elementary shapes and since the splashes are connected to the blood level, which you can't call an elementary shape, I had another reason to do it by hand.

I agree on the photo realism point. It's over-rated. This is a fantastic rendering. I liked it when I first saw it at Renderosity and I like it here. Congrats on the front page plug! C4D Forever!
