Work pays for 20% of $2000 of it/grand total= $2479

-EDIT ON PRICE AT BOTTOM

I dont think I missed anything. Rember, Im getting Dual Processors, 4x 512Mb of Ram (has to be Registered and ECC) and Im getting Dual monitors. This machine will be used mainly for 3D modeling and animation, rendering (3DS Max), and some editing (Adobe Premiere or after effects), and maybe a little bit of gaming, but very little. Does anyone think that there is something better than this setup or is it good as is. My budget is around $2500 give or take a few hundred (tax). I dont need this machine right away, so should I wait for something better and new that is worth the money or wait. Thanks everyone. God bless.

-Matt M.

Edit- I did a little miscalculating on the Processor... it is not $877 together, its $406, bringing the grand total to............................................................................................................ $2008

I'd look into the Iwill DK8N. It's based off the Nforce 3 Pro chipset, and gives some performance gains as opposed to the AMD 8000 chipset found on that Tyan ;) Not saying theTyan is a bad board, but there is faster.

Look into it at least. Also keep in mind on AMD's 8000 there are issues with ATI and the AGP slot (i know you're getting a Geforce, but keep that in mind if an ATI card ever interests you :P) Also, this same AGP host controller (dont ask me why they didnt use Nvidia's) found on the 8000 series is also in the DK8N, so it suffers the same problem.

Just wanted to point out the graphic card has one DVI port and one VGA port, so you're going to have to run the monitors off diferent ports.. should work - but I've never tested that. If you want a reliable card which has 2xDVI port, you should get a Quadro, it's also going to be much faster than the geforce (although you can mod the geforce)

Or just buy a geforce with 2 dvi ports instead of one.

Video Card- Gigabyte GeForce 6800 GT 256Mb DDR AGP 8x DVI-TVO (OEM)-$400

This is a gaming video card, not a 3D application card. You'd be much better off with a Quadro one.

Riva Tuner should do the trick...

Well my "gaming" card is doing professional work under the quadro name . The GF 6800 series cards all run perfectly as Quadros. Not to mention it has about one less zero in the sticker price. :applause:

Yeah I actually plan to modes (is that the right word?) the GeForce video card to a Quadro fx 4000, when that is possible... and this way its cheaper... so Ive heard. The 6800 GT was still supposed to do pretty good with 3D, am I correct. I mean, it works fine, right?

Lots- I checked that motherboard out, and it seems to be twice as much as the motherboard on my list. It doesnt look too much better, other than the 8 Ram slots that it has (my choice had 4), but is that worth double the price? And wouldnt I have to change around some stuff so that it configures to this motherboard? Thanks for your help though.

Edit- you posted a minute before mine, so Im just gonna say- exactly what I thought!

Thats double the price, but is it that better of a performance gain?

Edit- Well, with my update on the pricing on the first post, I could afford this other motherboard, but still, is it worth it?

Where is it possible to buy one? You can get one from Allstarshop...

XFX GeForce 6600 GT 128MB DDR AGP 8X Dual DVI/TVO (OEM) (http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=409&pid=10309&sid=9TJFQGAGP1M99GBB0HK9N8H95NQ22032)

Why the big difference in price? Surely it's not all about the RAM?

So this is a good system? Im going to wait on the monitors till they have a better sale on at Best Buy, like a month ago it was $140 off the regular price instead of $60 off. Anybody else have input? Thanks a lot to everyone.

P.S. Does anyone know when they are planning to lower the cost of LCD screens?

-Matt M.

[Edit: I think IM gonna need a fan and heatsink with these processors, so Im switching processor to...

Processor: DUAL AMD Opteron Model 242, 1 MB L2 Cache 64- bit Processor - Retail - $458

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-389&depa=0

So the total is now $2075]

I'm getting a similar configuration as you. Same board and processors. I also got an LG 1730B monitor and I'm very happy with it. Got only 1gb of memory (that's the first thing on my upgrade list, as soon as I get some more money). You may wan't to consider getting a WD Raptor as a work drive. Also, a Tyan nforce4 board should be out soon, but it will probably be signifficantly more expensive than k8t.

What is special about this hard drive (Im sorry if that sounded rude, but its not meant to be)? I asked an engineer from work, and he says I should get a Samsung 710N monitor, its like $100 less. That is here...

Thanks.

-Matt M.

[EDIT- found out that the 710N only uses D-Sub, so not DVI, and I think I would want one with a straight DVI to DVI. The 710T...http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=24-001-164&depa=1... has DVI, but its a whole lot more money... I think Im just gonna stick with the system and wait till monitor's price drops to get one of these babies. Cya.]
