I'm not pleased with how bloated Norton AntiVirus has become over the past few years. I'd like to switch to a new AntiVirus solution but was wondering what was out there that handled the stuff Norton did?

In particular:

Script blocking
Worm Blocking
real time protection (I guess that's where the bloat comes from)

I found an ad in PC World Magazine advertising NOD32. Their ad boasts some seriously fast scan times and I was wondering if anyone could toss in their 2 cents on those guys.

!@#$% just typed up a long post then clicked another web link and lost it all.....

Anyhow I really get nervous with any virus scanner that is guessing with a hysteresis style of scan. Most likely it will in fact catch some bugs that are not known, but it may also make a mistake and attack a file you need. This is why I recently chose pc-cillin from trendmicro. Quite small system needs and updates at least once a day. The firewall is full featured as well.

Try out the 30 day trial for free fully featured. After removing a norton product be sure to dig out the hundreds of left behing registry keys, just one more reason to avoid using norton products anymore. Jv16 powertools is great here or even regcleaner.

good luck

Oooh, you know about that link click thing, u can force IE to open links in a new Window. Just go to tools > internet options > advanced and check the setting for it.

In anycase, I'll look into that one.

I use Nod32 alongside Zonealarm.

I wouldve chosen PC-Cillin but when they added a firewall in their suite I just ditched them. I dont like all in ones. I like one product for one specialty, works better that way too.

Anyway, Zonealarm never failed me. I use just the single Zonealarm Pro, not the security suite (again they added antivirus with their product).

When i visited sites I used to visit before while I had PC-Cillin, Nod32 caught a shit load of stuff i never seen before. Nod32 has advanced scanning methods and even if you turn it all on, still scans faster than the ones ive tried before. I started with McAfee for DOS, then Norton when i went Windows, then back to McAfee, then to PC-Cillin, now Nod32. Zonealarm is an easy to use but very efficient firewall.

If you want, you can give alot of different ones a try, but do it while your LAN cable is unplugged for some extra pananoia hehe.
