This is a crop in of the work I have done so far on the Warrior. Don't know if I'll finish in time but it has been a good experience seeing all of the great work done for this challenge. Good luck to all who finish. Thanks for taking a look. C7C's always welcome!

Here is an admittedly rough concept sketch for what I'd like to do.I know I am entering late so I am keeping it simple. It will be interesting to see if I can get this finished but I will give it a shot. I have seen so many impressive illusrations on this challenge, I look forward to all crits.

Welcome jlbanchick, better step on the gas!
It may be a bit early for some of these comments but I will say it anyway. Things my change or I may not understand the concept sketch fully. Maybe also explain it a little too next time.
I like the Idea a lot. Maybe add a bit more fear into the guy on the bottom. Have him stretching farther to get his gun but have it just out of reach. It will add more action to the piece. If the guy on top is an alien maybe give more of alien qualities less human. Unless it’s not an alien. Right now it looks like Space man vs. primitive man. Forget that last comment if it’s supposed to be that way. It would be nice to see some type of primitive weapon in his hands. I’m not so sure I like the big moon where it is. It may be nice to see it much smaller. I know you wanting it to show non earth like planet but you have a lot going on in the foreground. I would bring most of the focus there. I think the big moon might get distracting. (I struggled a lot with my own moons!) Maybe do several moons to get an idea of a non earth planet. I am far from perfect myself so if you hate all of these ideas that’s ok. There just comments and random ideas.
Good Luck!

Here is a tightened up line sketch of my concept.
Thanks for the comments BlueEyeLizard! Good Stuff. I had in mind to add a weapon for the Warrior but couldn't decide what weapon to go with. So if you can't tell, The Warrior is using the flag that the Astronaut had just planted in the ground.
I also decided to totally leave the gun out of the picture. It's a little more fun to guess at what he may be reaching for.
I still have some things to work out before color (more detail/lighting/shading) but I would appreciate any and all feedback and crits!
All for now..

I like the pose on the Alien in your first sketch. More dynamic and you could see it's face / exprerssion better. I think it would be great (but time probably won't permit it) if you could pull out more and change your camera angle so that we would be looking down a bit. My thinking is that these guys are on the field of battle, this is the last human to survive (for a second or two at least) in a sea of death and the King / leader of the Aliens is planting the flag to secure the victory.
I think seeing the field of battle and the end of the mayhem would really ad the "Grand" in your space opera challenge!
Good stuff...

Here is my first color sketch. Let me know what you think. I'm hoping to get a more "painterly feeling" out of later WIP's but this represents how I work now. I'm just getting back into doing illustration after a long layoff and I'm trying to get into the flow again.
As always all comments and crits are greatly appreciated!
