Hello everyone!
I'm new to CG talk, and I wish my first post wasn't a question but... I have a difficult time modeling a "sling", and hope to get some input.
This picture shows the "sling" I am trying to model. It's basically wire rope looped around to form an eye, and the end of the rope is spliced back into the wire rope.

My current idea is to create some cross-sections, and then loft the sections to get the rope structure. I'll be asking my boss if it's possible to get an organic version of the sling (perhaps using normal rope), soaking it in some epoxy, then cutting it open to get a better view of the cross sections.
Do you guys think if there are any easier way to model this (hair plugin perhaps?) - my past experience includes RayDream Studio back as a student, worked with Max 4 for several years (engineering models/animation), then changed jobs (jsp/asp programmer!) Right now, another career change back into 3d animation, and wow, it's Max 7...
