View Full Version : Polys from points?

Can I select 4 or more points and execute a command that will create a polygon from them? I find that I often have holes to fill and have to extrude an edge (which is extremely time consuming} or use the fill hole tool (which gives me unreliable results).
??

?

Anyone?

did you try append to polygon ?

Apend polygon is the best for filling holes.
But about the 4 points select thing. Umm if there was a face inbetween the 4 points select the face instead and go to. Editpolygons > duplicate face.
does that help?

If you have a hole to fill, and you want to do it quickly, you only have to select one edge and then go to >Edit Polygons>Fill Hole. Then you can use the split polygon tool to make that hole managable.

There is no need to select points.

I've yet to try the suggestions you are making but let me explain my problem a little more indepth. You see, in doing logo work I typically create my line work in illustrator and import that into Lightwave. From there I bevel and extrude until I get a shape I like. At that point I delete my n-sided polys and start filling in the face with quads.
I tried this technique in Maya, but I don't comprehend the tools well enough. To begin with, I have yet to figure out how to extrude an imported path. I did discover the bevel tool (which took LOTS of experimentation) but leaves the front of my logo faces open, which should be an easy fix (hence my question regarding creating polys from points).
I'm going to give the append recommendation a try. Thanks.

in lightwave just select the points (in order) then press p to make poly. Or dont delete the ngons and instead press T to triangulate this should import into maya fine (unless you really need the quads then you can probably optimise to remove tri's and make quads or just select two tris next to each other and join the polys together in lw). this is a very long way of goingg aboutt hings btw... wyh not just import the ai eps into maya and extrude there... there'a bevelCaps mel script somewhere that you could use to your advantage... i think the tutorial for how to use it is on the alias wavefront homepage. alternatives you can go the long way and select the curves on the ends of your bevel and make planes.... i forget off the top of my head what the full name of this tool is on maya... darn.

For use of the Bevel tool in Maya, I recommend getting the new plugin Bevel Plus. You can find it on AW's website in the downloads section. Read all the docs. that come with it and it will really help you toward making what you want with your text.

Good thing you mentioned beveling dmcgrath. Is there really a solution to fix it?

I mean, just try it out yourself. Select two edges, bevel, works fine. Select more than two edges, bevel, and all these weird edges appear inside the beveling messing everything up?!?

And I have the Bevel Plus too, but isn't it just for making those "neat" text bevelings? Or have I misunderstood it completely? (I haven't tried it out much, AKA at all)

Bevel Plus. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Thanks guys, this is EXACTLY what I was looking for a straightforward solution to a straightforward problem. With this tool, creating controled, beveled text is easier to do than with any other program.

I appreciate yall's help so much. And the apend thing. That's a handy trick too. Can't thank everyone enough.

Caio!

Bevel Plus works great for text as far as I have seen, with as little as I have also used it. When I am making my own models I just tend to plan on putting the bevels in as I model them, I rely heavily on the split polygon tool for beveling, you can open a tool settings box for this and it gives you amazing control.

But you are right -wT- the regular bevel tool doesnt work well at all. I dont ever consider using it.

And to Miguel446, we all like to help here, this community is full of geek support. :hmm:

Yeah, I haven't considered either for a long time, and exactly because it doesn't work. It's just that I just recently watched all those timelapses I have, and saw how usefull beveling could be at times.
I think someone mentioned that highend contained scripts to fix (Or implement better) the beveling, but I haven't found anything... too bad...

I think it is called MJPoly tools, it does something that can become a very useful bevel tool as well. One of the tools allows you to select an edge or a length of edges and then it splits the faces on a certian side. In the channel box right after the face(s) are split you can change the percentage of the split and make it practically anywhere on that face. It then it is just a matter of pixel pushing to get the edge to become a bevel. Use it with the select contigous edges option and you can split aroud an entire object.
Okay, enough talk and just go out and try this thing.
