Hey. I've been getting...strange noises out of my PC lately. Usually, I'm able to ignore these pretty easily, so long as my computer continues to run normally. But right now, I can't really afford to replace anything in my PC. Maybe a case fan or heatsink, or something along those lines. But having to buy a new PSU/CPU or whatever else would go a bit beyond my current pathetically-low budget. So I just want to see if there's anything that I can prevent from getting any worse, if anything is... breaking. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/sad.gif

First off, specs:
3ghz P4
Asus P4P800 mobo, 512mb ram
Antec 380W PSu
120gb 7200rpm WD HDD
2x120mm fans
256mb 9800pro

sound#1:
This is actually a sound that just showed up a few months ago, which I started hearing after moving my desktop to my new room. For the first year that I had this system, I never got this sound. Anyway, it's the kind of sound you'd expect to hear if you had a pin sticking up against the spinning disc of the HDD (although fairly quiet). And for that matter, it sounds like it's coming from the HDD, though I can't tell for sure. However, to support the idea of it coming from the HDD, I only here the sound at times when the harddrive is getting heavy read access. This could be something like searching through thousands of files; browsing through my music collection in Windows Media Player seems to bring out the sound every time.
Normally, my first thoughts would be that I have a drive all set to crap out on me. But like I said before, everything is running just fine, and has been running fine for the 4-5 months since I started hearing this. I've run checks on the hard drive to scan for bad sectors, and have come up with nothing. Any kind of tests I should run (other than skandisk) to see if anything is failing? Or maybe this is a normal sound that I just hadn't noticed before? I haven't known HHDs to make that sort of sound normally...But then I haven't known many people that put as much crap on their HDD as I do. :p

sound#2:
Now this is the one that's really bothering me, that just started occurring today. The best way that I guess I can describe the sound would be to say that it just sounds like a fan spinning way faster than it should be. Seems to get slightly louder the longer I leave the computer on. Would fans ever make a sound like that if they were beginning to fail? I thought that maybe my processor was starting to get warmer than usual, and that maybe a fan was speeding up to fight back the heat. So after running a couple programs in WinXp briefly, I reset and checked the temp on my processor: 43C. That's pretty normal (for being a little bit past idle), right? Do heatsink fans and the fans in PSUs even monitor temperatures, or do they generally run at a set rate? I know my rear 120mm fan should have a set rate...

Bleh, maybe I'm just paranoid...http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/suspicious.gif

HD are very sketchy. I would recommend just go to the store and buy a new HD for back up. format it and back all you stuff up on it. So if you main drive dose fail your not squrewed. or you can just burn your data on DVD disc...same thing just make sure your bk-ed up.....with you fan issue it could many of things. The fan can be going bad and just buy a new one for about 14 bucks...it would be worth the cost just to be safe...don't want that CPU to fry.....BUt make sure to Bk up your stuff it sounds like your Drive could fail if not already on the verg......best of luck

have a look at your 9800's fan, and check its settings to make sure it's not overclocked, even accidentally. That should account for at least sound #1. Might wanna take a good ol' can o' air to all your fans and exposed spinny parts, which you should do on a regular basis anyway.

And if you think it's the HD, back everything up onto CD-Rs NOW. Trust me, you don't want to be stuck in a situation where your data is all lost, especially on top of having a blown HD. If it comes down to it, you may have to purchase a new drive, but even if you have to go for a while without your computer, at least all your data will be there when you get back to it:)

for the fan speeding up noise, check that nothing is obstructing any of your fans internally or externally to the case. If you ahve a clogged filter (if your case has filters), or something equivalent, the physics involved will make that kind of noise. (and it's not good for the fan).

I'd give all your fans and heatsinks a good cleaning, and make sure the screws attaching the HD to the case are not tightened down real hard.

diagnosing sounds by text is kind of hard.

i get this kinda too, something after a lot of use starts to make a high pitch but not loud noise. it sounds like a really weird fan or something only happens after extended use though
