hi,everyone know that amd opteron is hot now........have many discussion about the performence and compare with xeon....after i see the Technical and Hardware forum at here,i start intersted with amd opteron.....the question is
i found that even opeteron also have a series like 100,200,400,and 800........
what is that???what series is suitable for 3d program???and then the price is diffrence.....what is the performence between 100,200,400and 800 series????
thanks :D

hey xiao_x,
i think you will find this link very useful

check out the link in the post here, there is a comparsion for xeon and opteron. the result is, xeon is better, with 30% difference.

if i were right..........

Scalability means you can make the system fit your requirements. 1-2 and 4 way refers to the number of processors the system can handle. You can start with a single CPU and then add 1 or three CPUs to scale up your computing power later. Thats especialy nice for servers where you know that demand will be rising over time but you have to keep the costs as low as possible in the beginning. For CG and rendering the scalability option isn't that important since you usualy go for the largest and fastest configuration in the first place :)

100 series opterons are for single processor systems
200 series opterons are for dual processor systems (also supporitng single)
800 series opterons are for 4 or 8 processor systems (again can be used in single cpu setups)

There is no 400 series.

I could go into the details of how each series differs.. but I wont ;)

Otherwise the performance of each individual CPU is identical. For example, all x50 chips, should, in theory, perform the same (be it 150, 250, or 850).

Also to add some info about the scalability: In comparison to the Xeon, the Opteron increases with performance much better when more CPUs are added to the system. Also, it is cheaper to add more CPUs to the system, hence it scales well. Note, that this is refering to systems with 4 or more CPUs in them (where the northbridge architecture of the Xeon really kills performance). In fact, the Opteron doesnt need any added logic to operate in systems with 4 CPUs, while the Xeon does.
