View Full Version : Making this image more realistic?

I recently re-downloaded Blender, and I'm still having trouble making good renders, I can model well, I just can't get photoreal-ish renders (And I know it's possible, I've checked the Blender galleries.)

Here is a render I made while testing different lights and setups, but as much as I tried, it's as realistic as I could get it:

I also redid it a few times, the second one is worse, but I think the third is the best:

How could I improve on this last image?

Umm... is it supposed to be a piece of ice beginning to melt? Is there a reference picture, or is this straight from your head? Specs, please, and I'll try to help.

Seems like a melting ice cube.

If that is the case, then non-photoreal-fault #1 is the lack of wet spot in the carpet. Color and spec maps are in order.

#2. Lighting.. I would expect a carpet like that to be deployed indoors, but if you look at the reflexions on the ice it looks like you are standing in the open. That doesn't makes much sense. By the way, Picture #3 has the best light setup.

#3. Shaders.. The Ice material on picture num. 2 is almost perfect, and the water mess material on picture #3 is also almost perfect. Try making a new picture combining those 2 materials (it seems like you are using the same material settings for the solid ice and for the water, that isn't right). Water from #3 needs less spec and more refractrion, ice from #2 needs more spec and maybe a little smoothing at mesh level.

Harky, there is no reference picture, it's from my head, just trying to practice good light setups on this 'light lab', someone told me to try it.
And yes, it is a melting ice cube on a carpet.

Apollux, how would I turn the spot where the water is wet? Or do you mean something else?
The ice cube material in picture 2 has a sky reflection on it, that's why it looks like it does.
I'll try what you said, with the ice and water, if I can.

Oh, how do I change refraction?

Here's an update, the reason the edges of the water are so defined is because I have OSA disabled, I also tried to give the ice cube a foggy look, like picture 2, just not so pronounced. I haven't added reflections of the room yet, but I will soon:

I wouldn't go with a reflection, actually. I've never seen an ice cube, even a wet one, that really showed reflections. Your image is getting pretty good as it is. If you really want some realism, put some pieces of lint and carpet fuzz on the ice cube - they always pick that sort of thing up when they fall on the floor. Also, some parts of the cube are just too much like glass - too transparent.

Alright, but how would one model lint and carpet fuzz?

Also, if anyone wants to help me, I'm on MSN, AIM and YM!.

One question: The carped is supposed to be one of those with natural/syntetic fibers, or it is an all rubber carpet like those you find inside some cars.

If it is a rubber one then I wouldn't make much sense doing the extra color map for the wetnest.

It's supposed to be synthetic fibers, but I was thinking of changing it to marble until I made this:

This looks more realistic than the ice cube, in my opinion, how could I improve on it?

Okay - that's better. Find (or make) a wood texture for the table that doesn't repeat.

IMO the ice cube is comming along A LOT more realistic that the crome sphere on a wood table, not to mention that the whole Chrome Sphere thing is a big CG cliché.
