this past weekend my neice was using my comp, and wen i came home, i had all there permanent desktop icons. What i mean by permanent, is that i cant right click on these, to delete, or go into properties to find out more info. They also somehow disabled drag and drop so I am unable to drag them to my Norton Wipe Info utility.
All of the new icons are web based, ie, poker, card games, printer cartridges casino online, bingo, web hostong etc...
The only Icons I want on my desktop are Maya, Recycle Bin, Spyware folder, and SolidBuilder.
At one time I had a registry edit program where i could clean up things i didnt want running upon startup, and so on. anyone remember any of these quite handy programs?
And how do i go about deleting these completely from my comp?
Thanx in advance

Do a scan for adware and virus'. I'm more curious to know though, do the links work if you click on them normally? You sure you don't just have a tricky looking desktop background??

Yes, its spyware. I had them too, on my server computer on which I set up the shared folders too loosly so someone or a worm copied and run an executable from those. I remember poker and other stuff. How did I get rid of them? I installed linux...lol

Seriusly though, since that comp was on like 24/7 without supervision or even a monitor attached I thought linux would be better for the job. Since yours is a workstation, try the spyware removers like spybot or others, if I remember correctly that particular thing isnt malicius, wont do any damage - its just anoying.

Sounds like your neice needs a smack round the back of the head ;-) She's almost certainly installed kazzaa or downloaded some other spyware infested tool (weather tool bars, smileys, clock updaters..... Check internet explorer, I bet it starts somewhere odd and has an extra toolbar or two.

Download, install and run this:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
then this:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
then this:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

And uninstall norton, it doesnt do anything useful.

ok, now today when i turned on my comp, all the installed icons that i was talking about, are gone. Totally strange. the only thing i can think of , is that i already had spybot installed, and somehow it uninstalled the problem.

Yeah, tell me about it, i had a litle pow-wow with her concerning this computer.:)

F#@C Internet Explorer! i stopped using that a long time ago and now i use Mozilla, give that a try, it's gonna cause Internet Explorer to go bankrupt...if thats possible.

As for the other two links u gave besides spybot, i downloaded them too, and ran them. Thanx for them, i found a bunch of S@#T on my comp.

As far as Norton is concerned, u really think i should uninstall it? I trust wat your saying, I just have never heard anyone saying to uninstall it.

Thanx again

I think he wants you to use avg antivirus instead(3rd link). Norton antivirus alone is fine, caught many bugs for me, but systemworks is a bit of a troublemaker sometimes. Windoctor can be a real danger, had xsi completely crippled for me. Often is is dead on but every once in a while it is way off. Just be careful when using it, always look closely at problems and solutions!

I would never run a computer without antivirus these days, so be sure to have something installed.

It depends which norton app you have, theyre all pretty crap imho. I see the various norton system restore, safety, optimiser apps causing vastly more problems than they solve. Winxp has a compact firewall built in, most people dont need anything more powerful. and AVG is a great and non intrusive virus program. I used to have macafee, but it was dreadful. It took a mountain of memory and constantly gave you adverts for their other software. When you boot, it plays an animation pretending that the software is loading, reminding you to buy their other software.

download "hijack-this" its a small aplication that shows you every service you have running on your computer - yes good and bad, the program is free and only takes up 1mb of your space. you can use it to delete unwanted sevices.
