I did this pic over New Years. If you don't know what it is, it's a dark templar from the game Starcraft made by blizzard. Spent a little over four hours on it I think. Most of that time was fidgeting with photoshop options. I think I'm pretty much done, but if you see something obviously wrong please tell me so I can improve. This is really the first digital painting I have finished and been remotely happy with so any input would be cool. My goal is to get this pic posted on the Blizzard Fan Art Page. Thnx! (done in photoshop cs)

Looks good. The only criticism I can offer is that you should create a different background. The one you made has Photoshop's clouds filter written all over it.

Hey thanks... I know exactly what you mean. Thanks. I was having a dilema on what to put in the bg but couldn't come up with anything off the top of my head so I just stuck the clouds in there. Before I submit it to Blizzard I will change it... to what? I don't know. Thanks.

I agree that the BG must um..GO.. After a few I almost said Sweet, Although I am having a problem with the highlights.. Even in darkness, highlights still retain some brightness. For instance, the highlights coming from the crystal and it's light on the character are too blue.

your templar is awesome but i think that it needs a scarf around the mouth nad the blade should be adjusted so that it its on the side of the arm like it is supposed to be http://www.sclegacy.com/show_image.php?art/breeze/breeze4.jpg

Maybe make the blade a bit bigger and menacing. When you play the game, you fear the templar and its blade...

Ok... here's the deal. After recieving such rancid insults on my beautiful background (yea right lol) I decided to lose the temporary clouds. The Protoss homeworld is Aiur which is a forested/jungle planet. The dark templar were banished to the volcanic world of Char. I'm still having a dilema with the background so I'm trying to think of possible environments to chose from. I'll think on it and try some stuff.
batavia- I made the blade bigger just for you
smirnoff- gave it kind of a ninja type face wrap. I tried a scarf but didn't really like it. I'm still not sure if I even like this yet so we shall see. I decided not to change the blade position. After thinking about it for a little I realized that it wouldn't be convenient. The way it would have to be situated, the character's thumb would naturaly stick directly into the blade. Hence I decided it would be less painfull mounted on the top of the wrist.
koinu- changed all the blue highlights to a lighter blue color. I think it looks a bit better but I'm not sure if it was exactly what you were saying. If not, please expose my mistakes. :)

I think this has potential to go somewhere, I would reccomend looking at references of reptiles for the skin(if thats the direction your going). So far your doing a good job, I would spend more time making it more relaistic. it may take a while, but it's a good learning experiance. I'll check back on this later.

ah now it looks more like a dark templar whit the ninja face wrap.
and i agre with you about the posittion it is more convinient this way.
about the bg, maybe you should like make a dismembered/wounded body of a zerg or terran

Thanks everyone for all your input. As for now I'm not going for a "realistic" image. I'm more guaging toward a comic book/sketchy look, but thanks for the idea (also my dad accidentally saved this file as a low res version so I now have some issues with high detail).I'm working on a couple background ideas now. Will post an update somtime before the week is out.

Tryin a background here... I think I like it. If you can't tell the shadows in the background are going to be dead zerg/terran so props for the idea.
Just throwin out an idea on the second one... The Dark Tempar are invisible afterall.
I really like the third one though because of it's the most realistic. :)
Like it? yes... no... maybe so. Tell me what you think. any input is cool.

thnx smirnoff. For the second one I just took the magic eraser to the origional picture then messed with brightness and contrast a bit. the only worry I have is that somone who doesn't know what a dark tempar is will be... confused. School got snowed out today so expect another update by tonight... thnx.
p.s. having an issue on the first example. there is a light colored line around the border of the origional image. I'm having issues getting rid of it. Is there any simple way to eliminate it?

I like the theory behind the second one the most. I can't really give you much suggestion, though I still feel that he is a bit to "out of synch" with the background, if that makes any sense. Dark Templar have always owned. =o)

Well slept too long on the snow day... and have been working on another art project for a week so I just got around to revisiting this pic. I made the shadows on the character darker so he fit in better with the background. For the most part I solved the problem of the light line around the character. I did a few other things but nothing major. I like it for the most part. If you have any final crits before I call it quits please educate me with your divine wisdome... thanks.
