View Full Version : Cel shading
nhytro 01-02-2005, 08:46 PM Hiya!
I have a few questions:
1. How does one increase the outline thckness in C4Ds cel shading post effect?
2. I´m trying hard to get smooth transitions but boosting "qunatizie" just makes it look more like a normal render.
3. I dont have AR or S&T, can this effect be enhanced with normal C4D tools?
I´m trying for the type of renders of two of my favourite artists :)
Pascal Blanche (http://www.3dluvr.com/pascalb/#)
Daniel Forsgren (http://www.danielforsgren.com/main.htm)
A very good example of what I mean is on Daniel Forsgren´s site, under "cgi" the first image( lady with red hair)
Thanks

Hiya!
I have a few questions:
1. How does one increase the outline thckness in C4Ds cel shading post effect?
unfortunately not possible. Rule of thumb is, the larger the imagesize, the thinner the lines. You could always try rendering the lines separately, and then thicken them in pshop.
2. I´m trying hard to get smooth transitions but boosting "qunatizie" just makes it look more like a normal render.
Hm, maybe by using the "softness" post filter ? Or maybe some additional photoshopping.
3. I dont have AR or S&T, can this effect be enhanced with normal C4D tools?
There are several free tools available, e.g. the Plugin "12point0", lets you use several outline types, and has a few built in cel shaders. And there is "shadesofcell", also a plugin for NPR-renderings.

ThanksHmm, yeah, I like the style very much :)
I personally use the 12point0-plugin, in conjunction with the built-in c4d-cartoon renderer. I use a very low setting for colour steps, e.g. max. 20 steps, then I use a few soften/blur-filters in photoshop. It takes a little experimenting, but its worth it. I am still a beginner, though.

Hi,
You can create good outlines with the build-in FlashEx plugin. See attachment. I use a
combination of Lumas and Colorizer shader in the luminance channel. I attached the file too.
Experiment with the gradient in the Colorizer shader.
hope this helps a bit,
Bob

Thanks Micha1138 and Bobtronic for your tips. Where is this shadesofcell Plugin Micha? Could in be that some kind of radiosity was also used in the renderings?

Hi Bobtronic, the file you posted is empty, am I doing something wrong? Could you create a material with the shader and put it on a cube please?
Thanks.

Where is this shadesofcell Plugin?
Here (http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/libintro.html) it is!

I made a little example scene. Its in the zipped attachment. The two pictures show the
final result and the outlines. Study the scene file and the used shaders.
BTW Shades of Cel is a shader/material collection and no plugin.

as bob said Shades of Cel is no plugin but a pack f preset shaders using the built in cinema ones that i did a few years back, amazing to still see it kicking around on the forums.
in terms of soft versus hard shading, don't use the post effect, use gradients, thats all and Shader for cel effects is. use falloff or lumas depending on light dependent or light independent effects

Thanks a bunch Bobzilla!

Oh, I thought one had to use the shaders in conjunction with the post effect, thanks, I´ll play with the examples.

Ack right !!! Of course SoC is a shader pack, sorry to post that misinformation, stupid me. I didn´t use it very often, since I wanted quick results without having to modify too much stuff. WIll give them another try in the near future, its too good a tool to just leave it lying around.
Thanks, especially to KaiSkai for that wonderful addition

sheesh, good stuff won´t be left out of circulation ;-)

Another thing you could try is using the cheen shader, without celrendering. Check your SLA presets folder for an example. Gives pretty thick outlines and adds a nice glow to your object.

Whooopa! I really like that tip too rikke, specially for the fact that I dont really have to tweak as much as the Shades of cell shaders. Thanks.

Almost there, whew, this takes a lot of trial and error tweaking, but its fun :)

out of curiosity did you try simply using a higher diffusion setting in the illumination tab of your materials, that alone should almost give you the shading effect your going for.
