Ya, it's pretty common for plugged links to be dead because people's servers can't take it.

just look at the amount of views a thread gets... subtract a couple of hits for repeat viewers.

Lots and lots. I mirrored a few video files that got front-paged about a year ago (when CGTalk was smaller) and generally a 20MB video file would generate 5-10GB of bandwidth in a day. Keep in mind that not everybody that views the thread will actually download the video or visit the related site.
