View Full Version : what is happening
ok i have 3dsmax 6 and radeon 9550 (not good, i know)
but 3ghz (hp) and 512 ram should do it for good.
i can't even draw a box in 3dsmax. it's slow. what seems to be the problem. can anyone help please. i have to model you know... i updated all my drivers and yet i can't do anything.

This software requires a minimum of 512MB RAM and 512MB swap disk, but 1GB RAM and 2GB Swap disk recommended. You probably need to increase your RAM.
See this page: http://www.avatechsolutions.com/products/software/discreet/3dsmax_sysreq.asp
oh come on. i used to do my stuff on AMD 1,8 ghz with 256ram and geforce 4 ti. everything worked just fine

Not quite sure what's going on, your system DEFINITELY should at least be able to draw a box. But have you tried changing the viewport display driver at all?
where can i change it? from start menu "change graphics mode". i tryed to run this again but it gave me an error and now my max won't even start :D but thats not a problem. i can always re-install it. i set it to openGL. you think changing this to for example "direct draw", will help?
or did you ment something else?

HEIDI will always work, the others depend on the capability of your graphicscard, which is probably not sufficient.

If you can get into the program, go to customize->preferences->viewports->change driver and you can change the option there.
Since you're using an ATI card, I'd recommend not using OpenGL. Try setting it on the software option, to see if the problem goes away. If that works, try putting it on Direct3D. Hopefully, it's just opengl that's the problem.
And please people, he should at least be able to draw a friggin' box. My old 700mhz pc with onboard intel 810e chipset graphics could handle that much.
If you can't handle simple operations with Direct3D, then I'd bet that it's a software issue; some compatibility issue that you need to track down.

A reformat always helps and can save time in the long run, unless backing up your files is an issue. If you have an efficient method of backing everything up quickly and safely, do it, and reformat. You'll be done in a day and can rule a bunch of stuff out in the process (such as specific software issues).
Test the box draw after reformat. Then test it again after each new piece of software install. If it happens again you'll know what software causes the root conflict.
i don't think format would be wise decision :P cuz i just bought it (pc) and everything's new. also i have like 60gb of important data so i'd pack this up a long time.
and another thing. i tried max 7 also. same problem....damnit :P i'll try this viewport driver thing and i'll let you know what it does then.
thanks for help

Make sure you have DX9 set as you graphics options. In the start menu i belieave there is a "change video mode" or "Change graphics mode" in the 3dsmax folder.
Hit control alt del and make sure nothing is useing all your CPU power. I know that certain virus scanners can play funny tricks with 3dsmax.
I used to work in max5 with a p3 800, 512MB of ram and a Geforce3 i think your computer can draw a box lol.

i used to be able to go up to 1.6 million polys on my p2 266 with 96 megs of ram. sure it was slow as hell but it was the max the machine would handle. 5000 polygons still at realtime speed. ( viewport tumbling ). geometry editing would slow down after 3000 or so polys.
hell, i used to be able to do more than a box on the p1 100s at school, and the 33mhz machines as well.
i guess im saying that its definitely some driver problem. cuz the machine sure sounds great.
actually it's not like slow, it's more like hacking or jerking or smth :D.
like, it's working perfect for an half a second and then it freezes for a half a second.
and i monitored my memory and cpu.. they're both pretty available. maybe there's something bothering max because of my HP (hyper-threading) cpu? is that a possible problem?

Could be. I haven't experienced any hyperthread problems myself, but you never know. Might try turning hyperthreading off in your bios to see if anything changes...
oh and another thing, it's doing this while modelling or like i said, even drawing a box. but when i manage to draw a box and then look around in perspective view...it's smooth
edit: ok, it works now. i installed java runtime and changet it to direct 3d... still don't kow whats the issue with opengl :S
ATI has pretty bad OpenGL support. Hence why Nvidia tends to score way better in OpenGL than ATI does ;) (Doom3 vs HL2?)
yeah, well hl2 works fine but doom 3 doesn't
