:D Hey man - your mantis is absolutely AWESOME!!!! All I can say is - RESPECT MON!!!! The way it's mandibles (or whatever they are called) move is so brilliant - it gives it so much lifelike character!
It's not often that I am really impressed by CG that I come across on the web, but this really is something else. I'm in awe.
Exceptionally well done! :p
I'd love to see it when the animation is completed - what are your plans for it? Or is it just a test?

That is very nice, is modeling mapping and all done on lightwave also?
:) brilliant, very realistic, if possible how did you acheive high realism such as that? dof obviously but anything else, with surfacing?

Very cool! One of the best insects I've ever seen done so far.
ShaWeet! How about a wireframe shot so we actually believe you modeled and rendered it!

Very nice work, specially the animation.
Even if I know is hard to make a photo realistic insect, that's close but I would maybe work a bit on the translucency.
Keep on.

Love the modelling, setup, texturing, redering etc but my gut feeling is that the movements should be more jerky and faster.. though I've never seen any footage of them in action so I probably got it wrong. Great stuff and more more more more more. :)

Very nice. Very realistic. It's not so much the modeling but the way it's shot and rendered that gives it its' realism. Nice camera work and environment setup. But is it me or does it look like its underwater? :p
Ls3D: Don't be so skeptical. Go to his site (http://www.3dluvr.com/jonkajtys/) if u need proof.

Hi!
Thank you so much for those opinions.
Infact I'm going to watch Mikrokosmos again, to observe the movements, tonight :)
I know that some parts of this insect definately need SSS, but I dont have this plugin, so I will try to make it with transculency and maybe gradients with different rendering passes.
(heh, maybe I will make a preset, when it looks good :)
But this rendering takes so long :(
On my pIII 750 mhz one pass renders almost 4-5 hours!
Wireframe model? here we go:
http://www.3dluvr.com/jonkajtys/obrazki/mpegz/mantiswire4.avi
Everything here was done using Photoshop, LW, and AE. A lot of procedural textures of course - and NO dof or XDOF plugin :))
thanks
