Can anyone tell me why my render is creating that weird striped effect across the raytraced areas?

The glass is a straight forward blinn shader with the following
raytrace options:
refractive index: 1.1
refraction limit: 6
reflection limit: 1

The liquid is simply another blinn with the following rayrace options:
refractive index: 1.2
refraction limit: 6
reflection limit: 1

my raytracing quality in my render globals are set to the following:
reflections: 3
refractions: 6
shadows: 2

its worth noting that there aren't actually any lights or shadows being cast in the scene yet. its just the default lighting at work here.

heh! found it. It were to do with the number of refractions in my render globals:
I now have the following:
reflections: 3
reflections: 4

dont know why it worked but it did so not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth here! storyboard gotta be done today!!!

cheers for your reply anyway.
