View Full Version : Know the basics, now what???
M1KES 12-30-2004, 01:24 AM Hi everyone! I just needed some help with what to do next! I am an amater 3d modeler and i am still giving my first steps in modeling. I know the basics but i want to try and do more realistic stuff with more quality! i would like to know how everyone here at cgtalk goes from amatures to professioanals as they are? I know with alot of hard work and practice but were can i get useful hints, tips, tutorials to actually do something impressive?

id give good thought to just picking something interesting to make, and then make it! and in the meantime, make sure it something you can learn the software with. even though its thought better to have modelling principles honed, i feel its easier to have confidence when you know the specific software well. if youre not too comfortable with making organics, do some architecture to get the finicky and sharp modelling down.
but as youve already said its just practise, and theres only one way to get practise!

I agree 100% with M1KES, do what you know and build off of that.
Every time you start to model something new, even if you think it's going to be easy, there's a lesson in how to do it faster, better, with less polys...
Pick objects around your desk or house, and start there, but make sure that you see it through. Maybe give yourself a timeline to finish the model, like as if you are working for a client to test your speed and ability.
As for tutorials, start with the ones that come with Max... then when you start modeling something new you'll start to have more specific questions to ask and search for that'll lead to someplace new. These forums contain a wealth of information, especially when you have specific questions from your specific model... once you start to encounter problems other people have more than likely experienced them and worked through them in different ways. Read through them, and you'll get answers to problems that you haven't encountered, but will.
Hope it helps! :D

Hello people. :applause:
No, I don´t agree 100% with simply practicing.
I´ve learned the basics by folowing video tutorials made by lynda about 3ds max...
Then, I´ve trained my skills a bit and now I´m making my tecniques better by folowing online tutorials about... everything.
For example, I´ve made tree tutorial, glass tutorial, water tutorial, etc. In this way, I don´t use tecniques invented by me, but better tecniques, used by professionals.:D
There are plenty of sites that have those tipe of tutorials:
My favourite is tutorialized: http://www.tutorialized.com/
You can also find plenty of tutorials in: http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorial.asp
After you have good tecniques, start making projects. :D
Good training.

that you made it, and worked for you, doesn't mean that the other way isn't correct.
My experience has been 100% practice, I didn't have good tutorials and much less videotutorials (good or bad) when I was beggining, so I trained myself (which was slower). I recommend making advanced tutorials, even "professionals" learn from them. But practice is more important:
If they show you how to model a face, model the whole body and add details, search for references, and improve it. But never, never post it as it was a work from you, because part of it is taught by another person. Then, after making some of those...you can make your own perfect models...:D:D

I've been reading all of these comments and i got to the conclusion that its good a little of both! Learning a few hints on tutorials here and there and then just practicing until you achieved the results you want and coming to this forum everytime i get stuck and don't know how to do something! Thanx alot 4 the sites Alberto_Ro for those sites, i am sure they will come in handy! And thanx to everyone who responded to my post! Cause i'm sure the hardest part about 3d modeling is getting started!
