If I build say, a robot right arm and then want to flip it (mirror) so I then have a left arm and have that as a whole new object that has nothing to do with the original right arm, what would be the best way to attack such a task???

mirror it under structure

You can also use Symmetry and export it to OBJ or 3DS then re-import it. (that's the option I like best, since it always delivers good results.

You could use Symetry, then Functions - current state to object....deleting the polys/side you don't want.....making sure you copied the original...so you now have two halves!

duplicate the item and then add a - (minus)1 in the scale box in the coordinates manager (this will either be in the z or x coordinate). i think you need to make sure you have the model tool selected whilst doing this.
