View Full Version : chanlum strikes again

... I finally had a bit of time between projects to play with chanlum again.
This example employs a Fusion shader in the luminance channel
with a subtle SLA fresnel multiplied over chanlum. In addition,
I also placed very low contrast 2 point fresnel gradient in the
transparency channel.

When I started tweaking it looked very 'waxy' ...
now it has a brittle, frosted glass kind of look. Any comments?

nice, sandblasted glass perhaps more than wax?

That model has 1000000 polys? :hmm: ......did I read that right.

Exellent! I gather from the poly count that the model is an undecimated 3D scan?

Fascinating...
I also love your "rectangle of the whirling squares" icon.

very nice.
i'd love to see what the shadow looks like:thumbsup:

Very nice. I would love to see an image side by side with the one you have already made, that does not have the chanlum shader on it, to see the difference.

... that's right, over 1,000,000 poly's
Adam...you are right, it's Cyberscan data I converted from a PLY file. Apparently the original scan is +9,000,000 poly's, so it is at least partially optimized. Cinema has no problem rendering this kind of geometry (renders in under 10 min.), but R8's revamped OpenGL sure will make the process much less painful.

If I find some time, I'll upload the 'waxy' version with a cast shadow.

thanks for the comments guys!

... sorry about the wait -- here they are --
3 happy Buddhas representing (in order) an evening
of shader tweakage ...

the first looks to me like a waxy/plastic and the third
like a frosted glass, but that middle one doesn't look
like anything i've ever seen (any ideas?!)

The middle one looks the closesest to Bisque Porceline I've ever seen in 3D.

Bisque is unglazed porceline

I know its a tacky idea but I wonder how chrome would look :)

Looks very good.... The middle one to me almost looks like jade or honed stone of some sort... Care to share the file?

Thanks!

Beautiful renders. I agree that the middle one looks a lot like translucent stone.

Would you mind sharing your shader settings?

Thanks,

slimpy

great work there. i gotta say i like the middle one most! to the others who asked to share: i think it is good to share stuff but you will never really understand the settings when you don't try to explore it on your own. :) plz don't get me wrong by saying that! if you explore on your own but really don't get the look you are after you can at least post a pic in the forum describing your problem and i'm sure that lots of people will try to help you improving some settings. :D

derwolpertinger, you make excellent points :D

I must confess that I don't really understtand how Chanlum works the way it does either.

ooo TRY THIS:

Put Chanlum in the Bump Channel, leave everything default EXCEPT: uncheck GAUSIAN!

Also, try mixing Falloff and Chanlum with Fusion... the results are pretty cool.

I'm working up some experimental shaders using Chanlum, I'll post the file on my freesite later.

Just uploaded a cuple of shaders.

One mixes two chanlum settings masked by a Marble shader with Chanlum again in the Bump Channel

The other uses chanlum mixed with falloff.

all i can say is you must have much time on your hands..... play around with chanlum.... sure... i can do that and end up with an entirely different result than the one above.... i thought forums where for sharing....???? my mistake? do you do CG for a living?

We all know I share a lot of stuff, but personally my opinion overall lies in the same area as derwolpertinger. I gladly share, mainly because I know people can learn from them as well, and my hopes are that people look at the files and experiment further sorta like a hand on the bicycle seat. but at the same time, having to wait for someone to hold the seat may take longer and teach you less than just getting up and falling down :)

I love to hold the seat, but I prefer to fall down myself.

I have to go along with Derwolpertinger and Kai on this one. The forums are a place to learn, ask questions, share IDEAS....not be given everything on a silver plate! In this case I would dearly love the shaders, then I could open up and add them to a scene and voila.....but what would I know? Yes I would know how it was done, but would I know why it occured?:wavey:

What would be cool is for us to really try to understand each of the settings.

I'm looking at the chanlum page, and there are only two settings I really understand: sample radius and the gausian option.

I think I undertand withat Initial Offset is for, but I'm not sure.

LucentDreams

offsets pretty simple, basicaly thnnk of it as offsetting the shadow map, so the greater the setting the further along the model the chanlum goes, an offset of zero should be the same as rendering with nothing, and a setting of 5 shouldprovide a realy translucent object.

Grey

hmmm... that's almost in tune with what I suspected. So Kaiskai, this would kinda simulate a "depth of transluscence" with higher settings? (it's what I envisioned).

:annoyed: really busy day at work ...
I was going to put together a quick page of settings describing
my explorations of chanlum, but I had no time to spare.

I will try to put something up this weekend.
thanks to everyone for the feedback, sorry I haven't had a
chance to engage in the dialogue...

i've "played" around with chanlum once more. and after a lot of tweaking->render->tweaking->render......and so on i got this:

i just thought i'd post it here. i hop it was ok for you chris_b.
...now i think the legs are a bit too transparent...well doesn't matter now--> gotta sleeeep.....

Can't wait Chris!

I've been playing with it a lot, and I still can't figure out how you got what you got...
