Whenever I try and put bones in my models, the bones go ALL over the place--- everywhere in the world! How can I constrain them to stay within the general region of my model? Sorry if this has been asked before but this is such a big forum! Thanks in advance for any help....

joints should only be created in 2d ortho views (ie top, front, side). 3d views are generally impractical for joint creation but are always useful for later joint transforms. ;)

Tried that. didn't work. it kept going way back along the z. Darn my noobish status! FYI, I'm a girl so i don't think he would complain....

Are "snaps" turned on by chance? That's the only thing I can think of that would cause the bone to go haywire. So, if you open a new scene, go to a front viewport, click create bone, and make two clicks and a right click to end, is the bone still going crazy?

i don't get why your having such a problem and why evberyones replies have been poor.
i'm guessing that your model is some where really random in 3d space, first select it with the move tool and zero it out in the world. then when u create the bones in the various orthagraphic views they will in the various plans depending on which view u created them. i don't really understand your problem any way because u could of just moved the bones any way after creating them.

hope i helped, if u still having problems send the max file
