Title: Luna City
Name: Hubert J Daniel (imaginations, Digital Amigos )
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop
Some screenshots from the opening film to Mutant Chronicles Online. It was never finished...
Created with 3D Studio Max5(scanline)
The animation wouldn't be the same without Bartosz Opatowiecki who provided most of the models and whose technical support proved invaluable. Thank you Bart!
Also big thanks to Jon Hughes, Claudio Pavan, Andy Baca and Kate Kurczewska for their fantastic (unfortunately, only occasional) contributions. And of course, a huge shoutout to Marcin Kurczewski who was patient and indulgent enough to allow me to materialize my visions.
The animation is a part of a bigger thing now; to see some of it moving, check out this link:

Hey Daniel, congratulations to you and your team. Thats some superb quality work you got there! But i was wondering... When you say it wasn't finished, do you mean its an abandoned project? If thats so, its too bad, it has some great potential. It makes me wanna see more! I'm downloading your reel now.

WOW WOW WOW!
Can u post wires?
12-27-2004, 05:05 PM
I love the look of those images (very haunting look about them).....i also like how the images have a 2D feel with the amount of detail one would find from some of the environment settings in a japanese anime movie, top stuff.....
couple of questions......how many triangles we talking here? and does the environment have the same look in the animation as those images u've posted up, or have they been run through photoshop to look that way? (it would be awesome if the animation maintained the same look as those pics) cuz i find many 3D animations tend to look too 3D at times if u know what i mean.
Truly amazing. Can we see a wireframe please?

the city looks pretty amazing! only some of the characters would need more work to be at the same level.
great use of matte paintings, this work is quite an achievment!

I am really happy you guys like the city. That was my first animated piece and
during the production I had to learn (painfully, most of the time) how to deal
with the moving picture.
It was a huge challenge ( and the main goal in artistic terms ) to keep the
quality and painterly feel of a still image in the animation. I think careful and detailed lighting was extremely important here, but what really saved my ass were matte paintings.
In some of the shots they take up to 70% of what you see. Since I am not a
great painter, I usually had to prepare a rich pre-rendered base to paint on.
So, in some scenes, if all the layers were to be put together instead of
using matte, there would be 2-3 mln polygons to deal with.
I will post some wires/wip screenshots soon.
12-29-2004, 01:57 PM

01-05-2005, 08:49 AM
I hardly ever post anything unless i love it, and i love this, the animation is wicked, and special since u said its your first real shot of animation. i really love the landscapes, and architecture. the charecter good too, but i think the enviroment is so much better. characters r hard for me, i wonder if anyone else find charecter design harder then enviroment dedesign ? ? !
man totaly love it so intresting.
01-05-2005, 09:24 AM
WHY four star?Five star, five ,five stars!!! Beautiful! SO fantastic,so volume,so spatially.
01-05-2005, 11:27 AM
Fantastic!!.. I love the dark gothic feel to it!
01-05-2005, 11:36 AM
Really impressive. 6 stars.
Without considering the high levels of creativity, I have a technical question: how the h..l is possible to make images like that, when with my amd 3400+ I get stucked to move a little mountain + 2 persons? Do you have a nuclear powered PC?
01-05-2005, 12:38 PM
I think that Hubert said much about it. In practice we didn't have to deal with millions of polygons, because we have divided scenes into few smaller :) I think that you can make bigger ones with your machine, really. You have to fit pipeline to your machine and time you have.
01-06-2005, 08:18 AM
Very good ambiance!! Amazing work!!
Unbelievable, so many details.
01-06-2005, 09:23 AM
