These look very cool :) thanks for posting. Does the new glow post effect allow you to set up Lens glows as well as standard object glow off of surfaces?

The surface of the crystal has an oily coloured quality is this the new Spectral Shader at work? looks nice... there's no Chromatic Aberation in the new render engine i take it?

Spectral shader: Yes

Chromatic.... : ? errr if you mean does a refractive object split the ray of light into its colour components, then no.

Glows, highlights and flares are individually controlled.

Seemd great. The new DOF effect reminds me of the post on postforum.

thats the image I have been using to compare rendering and such, I mean X-dof is the best oo the market so who better to compare against. I'll be the first to say ours is not as good, buts its satisfactorally close in my opinion. I will get one using an original composition as soon as I can, but the reasonthis is such a handy image is because it uses the various new features that are in the new DOF.

No chromatic aberatin, though the spectral shader can produce pretty good results, and is far faster. Not saying this makes it better, but just saying it has definite strengths.

derwolpertinger was experimenting with DOF tonight! We were talking about how in 3D it's not very simulated very well...

I guess that's not true anymore!

(and I finally figured out what DOF means... thank you derwolpertinger) :D

This is all very exciting. Does the DOF offer different iris types? (Hexagon, oval etc?)

I'm not sure if i put my questions about the surface highlight glows properly, i was just wondering if you're able to use other sorts of glows than just a straight "glow", like can you have lens flares at the highlight glow points? Or is that not an option? Oh and does the highlight glow effect happen to everything in a render or just to s specified object (like 2d motion blur)?

I'd heard that there's now a heap of distance colour filters too... any chance of seeing what sorts of effects these are capable of? What benefit do they have over using a fog environmental object?

Yes variable iris shapes. Just usd pentagonal as that is what the X-dof one used.

As for glow, I haven't used it too much yet, thie crystal example actually uses the highlight effect which is a lensflare on a specular highlight, its just that the specular is wuite wide, the tolerance I set quite high, and the flare ery soft and smooth so it may seem more like a glow.

YES, YES, YES....OHHHHHHHHYEEESSSSSSS......sorry...but things are looking up for DOF! Love the pics, the only thing which gives away the olive oil pic not been a photo is the procedural wood on the pepper pot....very nice indeed. But I will be happy for a while just having a DOF solution which looks that good!

Thanks for the pics!

I'm very impressed by the glow, very nice work; but that DOF is awesome, very similar to x-dof results. Incredible, marvellous work! How about the rendering times to calculate that DOF?

Well I did a new 1600x1200 render for Mash, so for render times on my 1.2 GHZ AMD with 256 Mb ram, and a few other aps (mainly photoshop, and ICQ) the image took 22 min 14 sec to render, 19min 38 second for the scene, with AA being the main reason it took solong, and then another 2 1/2 minute approximately for the DOF, the new render had heptagon artifacts, and colour tint as well so that adds to the time frame, it seems that colour tint if really complex use of colours, can rewally ad to timeframe. Fewer colours the better, but very nice and powerful tool.
