This is my first post here and I start with a stupid problem ^^
Since english is not my language (I'm from Italy) i'm sorry if i make some mistakes:sad: (it will happens for sure! It's endemic to me...), i hope you all understand!
Well now go to my issue:
Hypothesis: I have to make a scene with many objects that have all the same geometry but different surfaces (let's say, as it's x-mas, that i would like to make a christmas tree with all those shiny balls ) I hope i don't have to make as many balls in the modeler as I need in the layout! Well if you clone them in the layout you keep also the surface...at this point i wonder if i can change the surface in the layout for each object independently...
Thanks for your attention :)

The answer is no you can clone all you want in layout but it well always be the same surface even though you have 20 or 50 the only way you can do this is in modeler.

If what you want to do is give alot of clones diffrent colors without making new objects and surfeces, then you could use any type of texture with world coordinates turned on, I use it alot and it works great

Another option can be to have let us say 20 maps in the surface and above each an alpha map consisting of a gradient driven by parameters like "X, Y, Z distance to object"

the negative point is that you will certainly need lots of tweaking to reach the results that you want.

Thank you all for answering me in so little time! I think i'll try all your solutions, it's just for studying!:)

Seriously, if its for studying purposes, you might concider working on a good virtue of a modeler called patience! :D A nice looking Christmas tree, often has a great variety of colors and shapes so the more balls you create the better. Changing surfaces doesn't take much time anyway, just copy paste to a different layer and hit the q button.

A nice looking Christmas tree, often has a great variety of colors and shapes so the more balls you create the better. Changing surfaces doesn't take much time anyway, just copy paste to a different layer and hit the q button. This seems to be the easiest way to do it and it's the way i've done it 'til now but knowing that this is the "only" method makes me more comfortable with it; you know it's like "yes, you're doing right!". Maybe now I really start making a christmas tree :)

I've seen that there is a thread where ppl say what they'd like to see added or improved in lightwave...well this could be one of those things!
