Happy Holidays guys and gals,
:bounce:Just wanted to say Im very excited to be moving to the UK to work on Captain Scarlet in a few weeks! Im quite honored to be working with the team and hope I can help push the envelope on the show.

Anyone have any tips for this American Madman in London? ;)
Any info on where to live, how to live cheap but still have a great time, etc is appreciated. Anyone looking for a flatmate? Give me a shout if you want to grab a pint!

Thanks for all your support here, and I hope to still have time to contribute to this great community!

See you on the other side of the pond (or is it the dark side of the moon?):D

Congratulations HowardM. Your talent deserves it. Looking forward to seeing all those amazing particle and dynamics effects you are gonna do.

I live in the North of England so unfortunetely I can't advice you on London living, but I am sure someone will chime in with some good advice.

South london is a bit of a dive, try to avoid it if possible :) London is 24 hours, so the trick is finding somewhere close enough to a tube / train station but far enough away from main roads to be bothered at night.

Thanks guys! :)

Ive been looking to move into northwest london near the studio, around Uxbridge or Slough.

:anxious:

I'm about 25 miles away from pinewood. Slough is pretty horrible, I don't know about Uxbridge but outside the M25 there's a lot of nice places to choose from in that area. Depends on what lifestyle you prefer. I moved to a nice little village between Oxford and Reading having lived in London for 6 years (ugh) - quiet, slow, relaxing. If it's a built up area you want there are plenty to choose from, but I'd stay in the corridor created by the M40 and M4 if I were you - saves crossing them and traffic nightmares. There are some nice smaller towns and villages places to live there too - depends on your budget too. You can get ultra nice n posh round that way too with Windsor and the Royals.

be prepared for the unexpected howard. our friends may well speak the same language, but life is lived differently in england (don't know if you've been there or not). look to changing the mundane details of your day-to-day life, like how you shower/bathe/dress/shop/talk/think/p**p/work/succeed :). i used to go there three times a year for another job, and was always (perhaps naively) unnerved by how a nation with the same language could be so utterly different. (which parenthetically is a good thing). congrats on your success:thumbsup:

You might want to schedule a driving lesson, especially if you drive with a clutch. :)

hehe thanks guys!

yep, I hear Slough is ghetto...I guess I will have to wait till I get there to scope out the areas and find a flat. I will be in a B&B until I find a place... I hope it wont take long to find a home...

Im looking forward to something different than America, something more laid back, less stressed out about money, power, etc....

...cant wait to travel around the UK & Europe (if im not shackled to a computer in the dungeon 24/7 ;))

Heh I wouldn't necessarily say that Europe is more laid back than the States :p It's different, for sure, but it's also a LOT more expensive than the States (and not just your basic living costs like rent, power, etc but also food, clothing, etc) so be prepared ;) I think Americans probably generally get really shocked when they travel out of the States and see how much the rest of the world has to pay for everything, hehe.

If you get the chancel to travel much, I highly recommend Scandinavia :)

Oh and hey, try and get some Maya experience there (I know it's being used on that show) and then when you return to the States maybe you can go work at you-know-where ;)

Have fun, Howard!!

Hey Howard,

Congrats! From Denver to the U.K. That will be a change for sure... No pitbull ordinances!

HowardM

Thanks Leigh, I will learn as much as I can!

Ya too bad Igor, but pitbulls are illegal in the UK too! I have to give up my baby to a foster home until I return...but Im going to get her back someday... :(

Damn Howard... That sucks. I know how much that dog means to you... Though, maybe a small sacrifice for the exposure, experience and new vigor for life you will obtain. Cheers to you mate and good luck.

Congrats Howard, Nice one chap.

Contrary to Crook's opinion/taste, I love London, and personally, growing up with the village life, I couldn't wait to get out of it(zZZZZ). It's a top city, with a great night life(check TimeOut). Also bare in mind that a good percentage of people there, aren't native either.

Anyway good luck, and wrap up warm(heh heh).

Moving to London? Does that include missing you LW FX threads in the future? Better not!

Well, I've been in London in September to shoot for Wallpaper magazine (current December issue) and stayed in Notting Hill in a posh guesthouse. Nice neighbourhood, but expensive. But I'll bet there's always something nice and cosy for a convenient price

Years ago I stayed on several occasions in New Malden near Kingston. 20 minutes to Waterloo station. Kingston is sweet and a bit remote, but it's hard to go out in the evening when you have to catch the last underground train at midnight.

Anyway, congrats to your new occupation. Hope that's what you are looking for.

Cheers

Howard,
Well done! It must be an exciting time for you. As for me, (selfishly), I can't wait 'till you're through so you can share some "real world" production experiences.( I know you'll be way to busy to engage in anything but work until your stint is finished). Give 'em hell.
Once again, WELL DONE!!!
E.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, leaving my baby behind is a tough choice, but hopefully this career move will be worth it....she will be ok, Im leaving her with a rescue that has 30 dogs for her to run and play with, so I hope she thinks its Disneyland. :D ...she probably wont want to come back to me when I return

Hey AT, I think Im going to be on White Team! :D see ya soon, 1st pints are on me!

Hey RPG, got a room for me until I get settled? :p What about an old used car?

Pancho, Ed...yep hope to get some good experience that I can then finally transfer to you guys in DVD form! :D

I thought just before Christmas that Mike Heinz was getting ready to be leaving Scarlet and moving elsewhere with his wife & family.

Could be wrong though.

Cheers!

You had better keep us posted on how your doing. :)

The only advice I can give you about England is try not to use american slang.
