View Full Version : C4D equivalent of ... ?
fretshredder 12-25-2004, 02:56 AM 'Evening everyone --
I am sitting here viewing a video on some Lightwave techniques and I find myself wondering what the equivalent tools (or plugins) would be to accomplish the following:
Weld Average
Bandsaw
Bandglue
Template Drill
Spline Patch
Anyone have any feedback?
Thanks all

there was an old plugin named saw taht I used to use, I dunno but i think mesh surgery can do that i dunno.
I am not really that familiar with LW though

I do not have LW8 just 7.5c
Weld Average = 8.5 I used a plug called wield tools, haven't tried it with 9 yet.
Bandsaw = Stock 9, Knife / Loop is close.
Bandglue = not a clue I've gone brain dead.
Template Drill = Boolean ? LW 7.5c Boolean was not dependable.
Spline Patch = not really the same but C4D has splines sorta.
LW has Sub_Patch = hyperNURBS.
SubPatch keeps Triangles

7.5c does not have edge weights.
http://www.atomic-3d.com/RK_Tutorial/C4D9/RK_C4D9_Weights.htm (http://www.atomic-3d.com/RK_Tutorial/C4D9/RK_C4D9_Weights.htm)
actually don't even have edges.just polygons and points.
TrueSpace has PolyDraw that neither LW,C4D has.
7.5c has morphs,hair lite.
#1 place for LW plugs http://www.worley.com/ (http://www.worley.com/)
LW has 100's of plugs but many deferent peoples.
http://www.flay.com/start.cfm (http://www.flay.com/start.cfm)
LW has a 2d mapper but hay BP2 is a LW plug also ;)
if u get Modo and Messiah your have LW not. ;)
it's a joke, ok bad joke, but it's the truth :)

TS6.6 SP2,LW7.5c,Basic C4D 9 + BP2.
zBrush 2,Poser 5...+ Anything else I can afford.
Just think of the insanity we would lose with out 3D.

Yeah, I'm still awaiting the R9 update for MeshSurgery

Weld Average
if i recall correctly, then Collapse is what you want here.
Bandsaw
Cut in loop mode
Bandglue
stitch & sew
Template Drill
dunno this one, possibly some sort of bolean, otherwise the old plugin edge extrude pro.
Spline Patch
no direct inbuilt system, however nurbs plane (then snap it's points to the points of the mesh) may do the trick, there is a plugin around to do this though.

/gary OK here's how I see each function working:
Weld average: in LW allows you to weld two points together at the midpoint of the distance between the two points
Bandsaw: cut new geometry along a loop of polys (and also can perform mirrored cuts). I think MS can do this, but to date no R9 update :(
Bandglue: much like stitch and sew, combines polys along a loop
Template Drill: not sure how to explain this one other than with an example. Let's say you have a plane and you want add circular geometry. In LW you can use this function, overlay the plan on the circle primative and "Template Drill" the disk's points onto the plane. Again, on this one, I'm being vague because I don't really get LW myself :-)
Spline patch: Allows you to spline model then for a given section create geometry directly from the splines (like I want 4 polys parallel and 3 polys perpendicular to a given spline). This one looks like a huge time saver. Otherwise, I am at a loss as to how one can spline model and then turn it into geometry in C4D
I hope that clears up what I am looking for somewhat. And yes, I am looking in the manual as well :D

well like i said collapse too for weld middle, or if you just want to deal with 2 points then weld will do too (just click on the middle yellow dot).
bandsaw=knife in loop mode or rather knife in loop mode is closer to katana than bandsaw, but you can do everything you could with bandsaw and a lot more with it.
stitch and sew is built in to r9
template drill - yes i think you really want edge extrude pro, it's spline extrude sounds very much like what you are after... well after you project the circle onto the object first maybe. (unless you want to do a bolean union of an extruded spline shape with your surface cutting object).
spline patch - plugin only for this.

it's slower then bandsaw modeling.
but good for modeling cars with curves.if you use a high polycount.
the mesh don't really flow all that well.u can alway tell a spline mesh.
u can make each spline a Quad or Tri.have a low poly count.
Spline patch makes polygons so u just load the polygons in C4D and flip normals.
C4D loads LW in side out.

OK here's how I see each function working:
Weld average: in LW allows you to weld two points together at the midpoint of the distance between the two points
/garyJust use stich and sew using the ctrl key or shift key I dont remember what one.
Bandsaw: cut new geometry along a loop of polys (and also can perform mirrored cuts). I think MS can do this, but to date no R9 update :(
/garyThe Knife tool dose this check off the mode you want in the AM.
Bandglue: much like stitch and sew, combines polys along a loop
/garyAgain Stich and sew does this with points or edges but not a whole loop at once. If you want to do that use the bridge tool with the loops selected.
Template Drill: not sure how to explain this one other than with an example. Let's say you have a plane and you want add circular geometry. In LW you can use this function, overlay the plan on the circle primative and "Template Drill" the disk's points onto the plane. /garyDon't know about this one sounds like a bool to me.
/garyNot sure about this one either. I don't know if you are trying to lay splines out then have it turned into polys or if you are drawing splines on a model then cut that into the model?
Can't you use an extruded nurbs object to extrude the splines then use current state to object to get the polys?
I hope that clears up what I am looking for somewhat. And yes, I am looking in the manual as well :D

( some of these have been already replied too)
Weld average:
I you are using r9:
Weld Average: Select your points, use Weld, click on the middle yellow button ( or any other point for that matter to weld somewhere else). Stitch and Sew in Point mode yields similar results for 2 points, if you hit Ctrl when using it.
In R.8:
Get the WeldTools plugin, it has a function to weld to the mid-point.
Bandsaw:
R9:
use the Knive tool in Loop or path mode. Works really well.
Otherwise you can select an edge ring selection , then use edge cut, to cut through the middle of the edges ( can give a similar result)
R8:
Get the free Saw plugin. Or use Mesh Suergry...
Bandglue:
r9
...euh.... use Stitch and Sew.. use Ctrl to stitch to the middle, use Shift to Stitch-Patch.
Works best by selecting 2 sets of edges instead of working with polygons.
r8
Get the free Stitch+Sew plugin ( limited functionality though)
Template Drill:
r9 You can cut an arbitrary form using the Knive Tool in Hole Mode. You could draw the 2d shae you want to cut out, then project it onto the surface, then snap to it when cutting the hole ( or even just draw in a viewport which shows the right projection, then sap 2.5D to it...).
Otherwise, there is the ExtrudePro plugin from Vreel.
Or use a boolean.
( no cookie-cutter function in C4d yet)
Spline patch:
C4d does not yet support Patch modelling.
However you could set up an approximation of the shape with a set of splines, tehn use that as a template to create you Hyper-Nurbs smoothed object.
There is a Patch plugin from a German developer, however there is AFAIK no demo, and the docs are not very well made IMO, so ont very convincing for me...
