View Full Version : Beam of light.
Seven 09-03-2002, 09:55 AM I would like to have a huge beam of light coming vertically down the screen, then the camera tilting so the beam of light engulfs the screen and the viewer gets blinded by the light.
Something like at the end of Independance day where the 'weapon' is going to destroy area 51 and the pilot flys into the weapon. The beam in that scene pilvots onto the camera and the viewer if blinded.
Is this possible in 3d max ? Does anyone get what im going on about :)
Thanx

It's called a Volume Light, and you create it by adding a Volumetric effect to your light in the "Atmospheres and Effects" section (there are other ways to do it but that's the most straight forward). You'll have to read the Help file for the precise procedure.

yeah thats what i tried... but that doesnt blind the viewer, it just covers the screen, Ive tried to put a lense flare in it but the vol light just makes it redundent.
hmm ill do some more experiements. Man i hate lighting effects.. I spend to much time practising modeling :) I can never seem to light anything proporly.
Not sure, kind of shooting blind here as i've never tried the effect you are talking about but what if you animated the lights multiplier to be really high when the camera hits the spot you want?
maybe that can work.
later.

Sounds like you'ld get a better effect if you tried compositing the blinding whiteness in afterwards. You could try getting it as close as possible with the multplyier like Fede said and then fade in a wipe out effect with video post.
Hope this helps,
Dave

You can also try to animate Max Light according to your camera's movements. So it will not blind us. Anyway never take off your sunglasses
Can we see some screen shots? it could help us help you.
