View Full Version : Aaah! This Damn Rig!
GRMac13 09-03-2002, 09:52 AM I am about to smash something. I set-up my character's fingers to be controlled by "custom attribute" sliders which were applied to a "dummy" object that controls the IK chain for the wrist. The fingers are linked using max 4's wire parameters and they worked beautifully when I tested them with the sliders. THEN, I turned on the ANIMATE button, which apparently is the equivalent to the "this-rig-will-now-self-destruct" button. As soon as I turn on "Animate" and try to move the sliders, the fingers won't friggin work. They rotate the wrong way, or they don't rotate at all. Then the sliders get stuck sometimes, or (my favorite) the fingers will spin erratically on whichever axis they choose. It's ****ing armageddon I tell you! In the name of all things Holy, PLEASE help me!
To remind everyone, the rig works PERFECTLY with the "Animate" button turned off. Once I turn on "Animate" and try to manipulate the "custom attribute" sliders, I spiral head-first into Hades.

I've had some peculiar behaviour with CAs before, but never this particular problem.
First thing: parameter wiring ranges are set to the current scene range at the point at which they are created, and they will bug out after that (usually frame 100 :) ). It doesn't sound like this is your problem but make sure you test it inside that range. If you can animate OK inside the original scene range then you'll need to get the SetWireRanges script (or something like that) from scriptspot.
Secondly: Try deleting everything in the scene other than the rig, then merge what's left into a new file and test it again. If it works in the new file then you know it's not your rig that's causing it. If it still doesn't work try deleting everything but the hand and test it again.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I've had a world of pain with parameter wiring and CAs in Max4 so I know how frustrating it is.

Thanx for trying Ian, the thing is just f--ed up beyond repair. Sometimes I wonder how max just messes things up out of the blue, it's so frustrating. I had to go back and re-wire the fingers to the standard "slider" manipulator objects. Anyone know if max5 has these same glitches, or did discreet cut us a break?
By the way, does anyone know how to get the slider objects to appear in the "perpective" viewport? As it is, I can only access them through one of the "isometric" views (ie. top, side, front).
