Seems like the first time I posted this it disappeared ... well here's try two :

I'm looking for a way to make a glitter effect on particles. I haven't been able to figure out how it's accomplished. If anyone is familiar with 3DSMax, the way I did it there was through Video Post (assigning material ID number to a material, and then changing the effect in video post, so on) ... Is there a similar way to do that in Maya, and if not, what would I have to do to make that effect?

I'm looking for a big sparkly effect. Any ideas would be appriciated! tnx

Sounds like you need to use sprites.

Generally speaking (all I can afford because I'm going to bed and my wife needs to use the computer), you need to make some sparkly glowy image sequences (in after Effects or whatever), render them out as, say, 30-frame sequences, and then use the sequences as sprites (after setting syour emitter type to sprites, of course.)

To get a good idea for how some of the looks you want can be accomplished with sprites, check out a demo of particle illusion. DOn't remember the URL since they were bought out recently, but you can find it relatively easy. As a matter of fact, it may turn out that the effect you need can just as easily be accomplisehd with these simple 2D particle emitters.

try emulating real life... what you need to do is set up your particle emitter to emit single quad polygons which have are highly sepcular with glow on, put these through some turbulence... then use the Glow Surface node (remember there can be only one of these in any scene) to set the type of glow to lens effect and pull up the threshold till you're only getting the lens glows on the actual specual highlights and not on the dark sides of the gons... then you should be able to get glitter as you desire...

randomize a per particle color value that you add to your curent color..

I too had been getting headaches over how to do this before.

The simplest soulution I came up with is:
1) Add a lifespan to your particles - 1 for EG
2) Make your particle type particleCloud
3) add the attribute radiusPP
4) Right click on the radiusPP and map a ramp
5) Make the ends of the ramp black and map a fractal to the middle point
6) Add a cloud texture to the paricles and increase the glow and incandesence
7) Play the timeline

Because they are software rendered particles you don't have to worry about comping them. You can change the radius of the particles by making the fractal darker or lighter. It may need a bit of fine tuning. I find if you do lots of tiny particles with a strong glow you can get some nice results.

Cheers
