I have been working on a couple models in LW Modeler and ZBrush that I would like to render in Maya using Mental Ray. I'm doing it this way because of Mental Ray's support for sub-pixel displacement. Lightwave's built-in renderer does not support micro-poly displacement; the renders are so-so with many of the details that were clearly visble in ZBrush smoothed over too much, almost like a highly detailed wax sculpture that was slightly melted.

Yesterday I began laying out bones for one of the models using Lightwave. All the weightmaps were painted a few days ago, again with Lightwave. I stopped laying out bones yesterday when I remembered that Maya may not have a way of importing the bones or the weightmaps that were set up Lightwave. Don't want to waste time and energy.

Is there a plugin or script that can allow for sharing between these two apps that will allow weight maps to make it into Maya? I read a little bit about FBX fomat, but I couldn't find a complete list of what it supported.

TIA

I think the FBX format is probably the way to go. If you download it from here:

http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/fbx/index.shtml

It should come with some kind of documentation of all the features from each program that it can translate across.

I'm getting started with it(FBX) today.

The FBX plugin does not work with Lightwave 8. The plugin fails to load on more than one machine.

It turns out that the plugin is stuffed w/o the correct suffix, so two of my computers mis-identified the download as a plugin, when it was in fact, a stuffed package for OS X. It seems to work now. If I started with the PC, it probably would have woked from the begining.

I'll update if I have any new info.

The good:
I managed to get a Lightwave scene containing an object displaced with a UV map from ZBrush into Maya

The Bad:
It *seems* that the FBX format strips models of their UVs, making the format pretty useless for my purposes. I don't use Maya as much as Lightwave, so I am probably overlooking something. Hopefully that is the case.

However, if I import the models from OBJ files, the UVs *do* make it into Maya. Unfortunately Mental Ray aborts when I use the 16 bit tiff that ZBush writes. Its not clear which image file types Maya will work with. If I use other types of displacement, such as fractal noise, Mental Ray renders w/o aborting.

Finally one related question: how can I be *certain* that a displacement map is using a particular set o UVs? I'm hoping maya has I way of visually showing a connection between a set of UVs and a map(displacement map in this case) that is using them. My guess would be the Relationship Editor, but I can't get it to work.
