View Full Version : Z-Depth
wigal 12-22-2004, 10:31 AM Hi!
How can I tell MR to save Z-Depth as *zpic instead of *iff....
I need this format to plug into an Avid Ds... Does anybody have experiences with those two packages working together?
Edit: general question, how do i set the focal plane being used in the z-deth image? Can I, or is it always a gradient going away from the camera?

The focal planes as i know are the near and far clipping planes of your camera....i did not have a chance to try it myself....but read about it somewhere....If you get the result i d also like to know the workflow....
Also you can get an IFF plugin for Photoshop.... :buttrock:
Good luck

As far as I know the focal planes only determine which objects are rendered and which are not.... means opbject inside is rendered object outside not...
what I needf is that the white areas in my z-depth are not continuously go away from the cam but are somewhere in the middle to focus on a partucular object...tried to get results with dof of maya default renderer but didn't work out that well...
any suggestions?

So i guess these planes also define where this "gradient" starts and where it ends...
Saying "gradient" i mean the Zdepth....
I can be wrong of course

Maya uses your clipping plane to decide on the start and end point of the z depth file. Turn off the auto clippling plane and set it yourself. If you want this data to be the opposite, just invert it in the compositor.
Can you render a zdepth file in the rgb and just reorder it into the zdepth channel in DS? This is a really easy option to do in shake, not sure about DS. That way you can just render it in the rgb channels with a zdepth shader. Just make sure to render it as 16 bit because there are only 256 levels of gray in 8 bit and the z will band.

yeah, that works if there are gaps between objects, and the clipping plane is between one of those... problem is that i have a big object and a single one an that on, which should be in focus....
