Help, I’m stuck :)

Imagine the wheel of a car, imagine the writing/logo that sometimes appears on the side of some car tyres. What’s the best way of going about this?

A: Create logo and bend it in Photoshop (how is this done?)
B: Create logo and some how map it/bend it using Maya

I think option A makes more sense, but I cannot find an option in Photoshop to distort images in the way I am trying to distort the image/logo.

you can do it both ways (ish)

in Photoshop there's a function that lets you do various distortion type effects to editable type, which has this icon : http://www.skjoldbroder.dk/fisse/t.jpg

I'm thinking the option 2 you suggest is more likely to give a good result though. create your un-distorted logo texture, then create a disc in your 3d app and map it like shown here.

hope that helps
all the best

The mapping idea don't work too well.

...and the T thing in Photoshop is great for text, although the option does not apply to images (which is a shame).

under the distort filters try out thepolar co-ordinates filter. Mess around with it a bit (with rect>polar and polar<rect) and see if it can help you out.

To 'bend' an image I would recommend the Free Transform option. Make sure your image/logo is on it's own transparent layer. Then click CTRL+T, you'll get a bounding box that will let you drag at the corners and resize/reshape your selection. If you hold down ALT or CTRL and click/drag on one of the little bounding box squares you'll be able to get different effects such as shear, skew, peak, etc.

Hope that's of some help. :)

That's pretty hit and miss, it's good for creating semi circles though.

post what youre trying to bend. If you are trying to create any sort of logo, use Illustrator. The use of vector tools are way more flexible in what you are trying to achieve. You can use an Envelope Distort, and use a Arc Warp. Photoshop isnt the end all for everything, mix and match your tools.

Thanks for that. I’ll have to look into Illustrator, as the logo is never going to map using the geometry I currently have, not unless I sub divide the surface more. Maybe bending the logo unsing Illustrator is the answer, as ideally I wanted to planar map the texture onto the geometry I currently have.

not sure why mapping doesnt work.... that is how it is done.

i could do it simply by adding a texture to a torus. for color of texture i used the image. (in maya)
