James Pence has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=5519)

Latest Update: Modeling: Space armor

Here is the progession of the space pirate so far..
I'll have to go back and try to adjust once I get the entire suit together. Right now the legs remind me too much of the mechanical pants of "wallace and gromit" fame.
I'm also trying to figure out the exact pose I want him to have... whether to have him look back towards the camera or not... etc.

During a war there is always the jackels that feast on the bodies. This on has one watching and waiting for his moment. So confident in his position he actually takes that ime to stand on the Hull of his "Jolly Roger" raidng ship. A couple opposing Captial ships and then a swam of support vechiles surrounding each.. the center will have some combat in action.

Here is the start... As you can see it looks like a skull and cross bones from above. the cockpit will be in the nose position and then some turrets in the eye sockets.

The ships on one side will be more boxy and modular...

these ships are a bit more like jets. and belong to the other side.

there is the question as to why he is standing on the bow. of the jolly rodger.. the power is off and using anything that requires high amounts of energy would reveal him to his prey... a cargo ship... I'll see what I can do about putting it between him and the plante in the bottom right... or maybe that is a star.

nice going rad. maybe you should make the he a female space pirate lol
do you know how much more people are using blender in this contest?

I've considered the female space pirate, but I think sleek and sexy isn't what I want on this project. I think the cunning predator is better.

As far as blender goes... Yours was the first other one that I recognised as blender. I've been working with blender for a little over a year now... but there are still a few things that I've yet to know very well.

If you have a question of how to do a specific effect feel free to ask... I might know how blender pulls it off.

I've added engines.... My orginal Idea put the engines on the ends of the wings, but I decided that it made them too bulky. This ship needs to portray speed and a bit of elegant danger. It needs to look like it could go anywhere, hence it is aerodynamic enough to suggest that it could fly in the air too
Meanwhile I need to figure what I'm going to do with the "Mentos" attached to the front. I wanted them to be turrets, but the boxy ship might have the market cornered on that.

When I first saw the left-side image of the ship I thought is was a robotic ginger-bread man... wacky how the eyes can fool you!

;)

I love the forward swept wing concept. I hope you add a bit more shape to the cockpit areas (gingerbread eyes) as I think they need some definition.

Textures are gonna make this ship sing!

Nice job so far!

Hi Radulan,
your models look very nice, they give the opportunity for a great fighter battle.
I'm waiting to see them textured, will be great !

I noticed that you started rather late into this contest - like me.
So lets encourage each other to get things done in time!

Keep up the good work!

Well I wanted it to have a bone-like finish. I used a bumpmap, and a color layer.. with an additional procedural layer of dirt/rust.
It's a pirate ship and why bother to clean the ship when it might help you in camoflage.
The "eyes" have found themsleves as unsymmetrical weapons systems.
Now off to go do more..

Hey Radulan
Don't worry about not modelling "'good enough'"
I thik ultimately, ideas count most.... and how you visualize your final image.
If you look at stuff like the Incredibles, the basic design are very simple... the execution is superb though and that's what really counts.
I think you have material for something extremely stylized and as long as you don't get caught up in tryng to beat the competition, you will probably have good material for a good final product.
Cheersa nd keep it going... :)

Gotta bring in the close.

With the advent of the return of school.. and the other stresses that have come into my life, I will have to realise that I will not be able to finish this thing.
Eventually I plan on re-using the models and idea in an animation, but for now I'll have to step away from the work before the deadline.
I wish well to all and hope that Things are free-er for you than me. Perhaps I'll enter another competition in the future after the pressure subsides.
