I'm rigging a character and setting up the arms as IK. I have an IK chain from the upper arm to the wrist. However, I need a setup which will allow me to twist/turn the wrist as well as bend the wrist. Right now, the x-axis is along the length of the wrist bone so animating this axis allows for the twisting/turning that I want. (Like turning a door knob.) However, it seems that animating the axis along the length of the bone messes with the way the other two axis are animated and complicates fCurves. This isn't gimble lock. I'm only animating 2 axis. One for twisting and one for bending the wrist. How do you guys setup wrists? Any suggestions?

Here's a picture of my setup.

One solution that I have used and I didn't mention is that I could twist the wrist bone along X-axis and then for the bending of the hand along the y-axis, just use the bone right after the wrist, the hand_bone. Is there any way to confine this to one bone though? I'd like to find a way to animate bones along their length without it messing up the other 2 axis.

In other words, if I animate along the x-axis, then animating along the y-axis is no longer simply a function of the y-axis. It's a combination of y and x. If this isn't possible, then oh well. Anyone know though?

Thanks,
Baaron

p.s. Maybe I just don't fully understand how pivots in heirarchies work.
