erm...probably worth looking at adobe.com

PS is the still version of AE
AI is for spline based artwork primarily.

AI is geared more towards vectors and print output and PS is more geared towards general purpose work and bitmap editting.

Knowing After Effects may help a little bit but not that much.. certainly more so than Max. In regards to 3D you will need PS more than AI for texture editting and creation.

Adobe Photoshop is a bitmap/raster based photo/graphic manipulation program. It uses PIXELS to create graphics-essential for creating stuff for 3D, film, Broadcast etc.

Adobe Illustrator is a vector based graphics program. It uses mathmatical points to generate lines, curves-graphics. This is essential for print design, as its technology will print perfectly clean lines-as seen in any printed logo, magazine etc...However Ilustrator has many tools that can help with creating graphics for Photoshop. I use them together often. I hope this helps.

If you work with film or 3d, pixels are in need. But you can vector something and convert it to pixels. The other way isn't possible (there are some ways, but very hard to accomplish).

But you should learn both ;-)

Hey ubi,

Well, the process of converting raster images to vector is not directly possible. Raster images are compressed and their vector data is not present once converted. It's like scanning a printed document. Previously, as a document on the PC it's editable, but once printed, it's not. To really edit it again (without access to the original document), you need an OCR, which isn't completely successful in its conversion, though some can get pretty close.

Same with converting raster to vector. There are tools, but you can't expect a perfect conversion. Raster images can be complex, making things even more difficult.

Adobe Streamline 4.0 should work with Photoshop and Illustrator, and you can read about it here. Photoshop would be good for post-processing still renders as well. Of course, you can load vector graphics there too (and do some editing). However, for vector work (almost exclusively), Illustrator would do the job. Read more about Adobe Streamline 4.0 at http://www.adobe.com/products/streamline/main.html

There are other tools, some cheaper and some free, that you might want to look into:
Vector Eye - http://www.siame.com/
VextraSoft - http://www.vextrasoft.com/

And this one's free (GPL-ed),
AutoTrace - http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/
Ofcourse with open-source software, you can't expect the compatibility and support of paid ones.

I haven't used any of these, so I can't really help judge which is better. You can try the demos.

Again, raster to vector isn't really something you'd want to do too often.

Does this help? :)

Well AI is basiclly photoshop cs with everything and your able to do animation except it runs a little slower than cs. but if you buy cs it comes with it so its no biggy. But I've never worked with 3d Max. I'm trying i can't seem to be able to get ahold of a trial version. and i've not worked with after effects... what is after effects?

I use both because in my work is required to know as much vectors as imagenes in pixels.
